In the quiet of my lounge, a simple question ignited a chain of thought that led me to reflect deeply on my role as a Human Flourishing specialist. It was a seemingly ordinary moment, yet it held within it a profound lesson about the power of unity and interconnectedness.
The question was posed by my neighbour’s daughter to her father as they passed by: “Daddy, do ants fight?” His answer, delivered with a matter-of-fact tone, was, “Yes, they do.” This casual exchange may have gone unnoticed by many, but for me, it became a poignant symbol of the fundamental principles that underlie human flourishing.
This contemplation was not an isolated incident. It was the culmination of a weekend listening session I attended, where I had the privilege of collaborating with the HR director of a group of companies. Our mission? Preparing for a Doctors Retreat designed to empower medical professionals on their journey toward flourishing.
These doctors, a formidable group, collectively write approximately 300,000 prescriptions monthly. Their impact is immense, touching the lives of some 8,000 patients each week. The success of this health consortium is intricately tied to the strength of their internal connections — the trust, empathy, and collaboration that bind them together.

Much like the ants that go about their daily tasks with remarkable efficiency and unity, these doctors’ ability to flourish relies on the unbroken links within their community. Let’s delve into this analogy further, exploring the wisdom it holds for those of us dedicated to fostering human flourishing.
The Ants: Nature’s masters of collaboration
Ants are fascinating creatures. They live in intricate colonies, each member playing a specific role to ensure the colony’s survival and prosperity. While they may be tiny individually, together, they accomplish remarkable feats. Their success can be attributed to several key principles:
1. Unity of Purpose: Ants share a common goal — ensuring the survival and prosperity of the colony. This unity of purpose drives their collective actions and decisions.
2. Division of Labour: In the ant world, everyone has a job to do, and each task contributes to the well-being of the colony. Some ants forage for food, some tend to the queen and her offspring, and others defend the nest. This division of labour ensures that essential functions are always attended to.
3. Effective Communication: Ants communicate through chemical signals, pheromones, and physical interactions. This clear and efficient communication system enables them to coordinate activities seamlessly.
4. Adaptability: Ants are highly adaptable. They adjust their strategies and behaviour in response to changing circumstances, such as environmental shifts or threats from predators.
Now, let’s draw parallels to the world of healthcare and the medical professionals who tirelessly serve our communities.
The Doctors: Healing hands and unified hearts
Medical doctors, much like ants, work towards a common goal: the well-being of their patients. They are interconnected, sharing a responsibility for the health and healing of those they serve. Just as ants divide their labour, doctors specialize in various fields, from cardiology to paediatrics, each contributing their expertise to the broader healthcare ecosystem.
Effective communication is paramount in healthcare, just as it is in the ant colony. Doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals must communicate clearly and efficiently to ensure patient safety and provide optimal care. This includes not only verbal communication but also the ability to read non-verbal cues and collaborate seamlessly as a team.
Moreover, adaptability is a hallmark of healthcare professionals. They must constantly stay abreast of the latest medical advancements, techniques, and treatments. Medical science evolves rapidly, and doctors must be willing to adjust their practices to provide the best care possible.
The unseen bonds of flourishing
As I contemplated these parallels, I couldn’t help but reflect on the invisible bonds that hold both ants and doctors together — the intangible but essential elements that drive unity and flourishing.
For ants, it’s the pheromones and chemical signals that convey information and maintain social cohesion. For doctors, it’s the trust, empathy, and shared commitment to healing that bind them as a community. These bonds are not always apparent, but they are undeniably present and crucial.
Trust is the foundation of any strong community, whether it’s an ant colony or a group of healthcare professionals. Doctors must trust their colleagues to make sound decisions and provide the best possible care. Patients, in turn, trust their doctors to prioritize their well-being.
Empathy, too, is a powerful force in both worlds. In the healthcare setting, doctors who can empathize with their patients build stronger relationships and provide more patient-centered care. In the ant colony, ants caring for their injured or sick comrades exemplify a form of empathy that ensures the survival of the whole.
Finally, the shared commitment to a higher purpose is the driving force behind flourishing. Ants work for the prosperity of their colony, and doctors work to heal and improve the lives of their patients. This shared sense of purpose not only motivates individuals but also strengthens the bonds that hold the community together.
Lessons for fostering human flourishing
So, what can we learn from this reflection on ants and doctors when it comes to fostering human flourishing?
1. Unity and collaboration: Just as ants thrive through collaboration, individuals and organisations flourish when they work together toward a common purpose. Encourage teamwork, effective communication, and division of labour to achieve shared goals.
2. Trust and empathy: Trust and empathy are the bedrock of strong communities. Build trust within your team and extend empathy to those you serve, whether they are patients, colleagues, or clients.
3. Adaptability: Embrace change and adapt to evolving circumstances. In healthcare, as in any field, staying current and open to new approaches is essential for success.
4. Shared purpose: Find and articulate a shared purpose that motivates and unites your community. Whether it’s improving patient outcomes or achieving organisational goals, a common purpose fosters a sense of belonging and commitment.
In closing, the seemingly simple question, “Do ants fight?” led me on a profound journey of reflection. It reminded me that, in the grand tapestry of human flourishing, it’s the unseen bonds — trust, empathy, and shared purpose — that weave the threads of unity and prosperity. Just as ants thrive through their collaboration, so too can we, by embracing these principles in our personal and professional lives.
