Boyhood to manhood: Nurturing growth and potential

“A man is a boy who unfolds into the full potential embedded in his DNA.” — Dr. Joshua Awesome

As June unfolds, marking Youth Month in South Africa, we find ourselves at a unique intersection where Youth Day on June 16th coincided with Father’s Day. This confluence is a poignant reminder of the journey from boyhood to manhood, a transformation that encapsulates growth, resilience, and the realisation of one’s potential. Reflecting on this journey, we uncover profound insights and actionable advice to guide the next generation of men.

In my own life, the path from boyhood to manhood was marked by a significant decision during my teenage years. Leaving the comfort and security of home to attend boarding school was a pivotal moment. This experience, a blend of the good, the not-so-good, and the outright ugly, was instrumental in shaping the man I am today. It was a journey of self-discovery and growth, laden with lessons that I would pass on to  boys facing similar crossroads.

Embracing the process of growth

The first reflection from this experience is the importance of embracing the process of growth. Each stage of life, from boyhood through to manhood, presents opportunities for learning and development. The transition is not a single event but a continuous unfolding. Every boy carries within him the seeds of his future potential, which are nurtured through experiences and challenges.

Actionable advice 1

Encourage boys to see each phase of their life as a crucial step in their journey. Provide them with opportunities to explore their interests, face challenges, and learn from both successes and failures. Creating supportive environments at home, school, and in the community is essential for fostering their growth and resilience.

During my time at boarding school, I was fortunate to encounter mentors who played a crucial role in my development. Their guidance supported my navigating the complexities of adolescence, offering insights and wisdom that shaped my character and aspirations. This brings us to the second reflection: the impact of mentorship.

Actionable advice 2

Establish and support mentorship programmes that connect boys with positive role models. These relationships are vital for providing guidance, support, and a sense of direction. Encourage men to share their experiences and lessons learned, helping to illuminate the path for the younger generation.

Another significant aspect of my journey was learning to prioritise mental health. The boarding school environment, while rich with opportunities for growth, also presented numerous challenges. Balancing academics, social pressures, and personal development often felt overwhelming. It was through physical activities and open conversations, and counselling that I managed stress and my well-being.

Actionable advice 3

Promote mental health initiatives that encourage boys and men to engage in physical activities and community events. Create safe spaces for open discussions about mental health, aiming to reduce stigma and offer support. Emphasize the importance of self-care and emotional well-being as essential components of growth and resilience.

Africa’s rich cultural heritage also played a significant role in my development. The Eyo festival is one that my family encouraged us to experience and enjoy from our SL BENSON family home in Lagos Island, Lagos Nigeria.  Participating in cultural events helped me stay connected to my roots and fostered a sense of identity and belonging. This brings us to the fourth reflection: celebrating cultural heritage.

Actionable advice 4

Integrate cultural education into youth development programmes. Celebrate and teach them, encouraging boys to take pride in their heritage. Use cultural events as opportunities to strengthen community bonds and create inclusive environments where everyone feels valued.

As we celebrate Father’s Day, men and the youth, let us reflect on the journey from boyhood to manhood. Every boy’s future holds the promise of becoming a man, embodying the strength and wisdom encoded within. At the African Institute of Mind, we are dedicated to nurturing this transformation, supporting mental health awareness through movement and action.

In the spirit of celebration and connection, we are excited about our upcoming Mental Health Leadership Symposium in partnership with the Rwanda Convention Bureau later this year. This event will continue to advocate for mental health, leadership, and community, reinforcing the importance of these reflections and actions in our collective journey.

In conclusion, the transition from boyhood to manhood is a powerful metaphor for growth by design. It requires embracing each stage of development, valuing mentorship, prioritising mental health, and celebrating cultural heritage. By reflecting on these elements and taking actionable steps, we can support boys in realising their full potential and becoming the men they are destined to be. As we celebrate Fathers and Youth Month [in South Africa], let us honour this journey and commit to fostering environments where boys can thrive and grow into their fullest selves.

By embracing this journey with patience and support, we can help boys navigate their paths and emerge as resilient, capable men. Let’s celebrate not just the fathers but also the boys on their way to becoming the men of tomorrow.
