Let me tell you a true story from an immigrant with leadership expertise, based on a recent encounter and an unforgettable flight experience on the way to Toronto. The stormy weather tested our resolve as the pilot made numerous attempts to land at Pearson Airport. Amidst the turbulence and panic, he found himself embracing the role of a unifying force, fostering connections, and challenging stereotypes. In this tale, I share three reflective takeaways from this extraordinary journey – the essence of leadership during crises, the power of unity in shared experiences, and the impact of empathy in breaking barriers.
Leadership amidst a storm
The turbulent flight highlighted the essence of leadership in times of crisis. As the plane struggled to land, the pilot’s unwavering determination to ensure our safety was evident. Despite facing multiple challenges, the pilot remained resolute in making difficult decisions, including the emergency landing in Buffalo, US. As an immigrant with leadership expertise, I understood the significance of decisive actions and clear communication in instilling confidence among passengers. The pilot’s calm demeanour and transparent updates served as a guiding light amidst the storm, reminding me of the importance of strong leadership during challenging times.

The strength of unity in shared experiences
Amidst the chaos and fear, I recognised the power of unity among the diverse group of passengers. Small acts of kindness, like sharing chocolate and organic caramel cookies (bought at duty free for friends and family), initiated a sense of camaraderie. Our shared experience of uncertainty brought us together, transcending cultural and social barriers. As immigrants, we often find ourselves in unfamiliar territories, seeking connections with others who share our journey. This flight taught me that unity in shared experiences can foster genuine bonds and create a supportive network, even in the most unexpected circumstances.
Empathy: Breaking stereotypes, building bridges
During the flight, I unintentionally became aware that I was the only black person on board, leading to unwarranted suspicion from some passengers when I inquired about the pilot’s announcement to do away with cannabis (for those who had some) which was legally allowed in Canada but against the law in Buffalo, USA. This realisation presented an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and break barriers through empathy and understanding. As an immigrant, it is vital to engage in open conversations and share our perspectives authentically. By doing so, we can build bridges of empathy and dispel misconceptions, fostering an environment of acceptance and appreciation for our diverse backgrounds.
In conclusion, this journey to Toronto was not just a flight; it was a profound lesson in leadership, unity, and empathy. As an immigrant with leadership expertise, I witnessed the importance of decisive leadership during crises, the strength of unity in shared experiences, and the transformative power of empathy in breaking stereotypes. As the applause and celebrations subsided, I left the airport with new connections and heartfelt hugs from fellow passengers, grateful for the bond that emerged from our shared experience. As immigrants, we carry with us the potential to be catalysts for positive change and understanding, no matter where our journey takes us.
