Aminu Maida, the executive vice chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has pledged to prioritise transparency and accountability in his leadership, believing this will help to build a resilient and efficient telecommunications sector in Nigeria.
Maida stressed the importance of transparency as a guiding principle for the NCC, stating that it will enable the Commission to monitor and evaluate its own performance, as well as foster trust and confidence with stakeholders.
Maida made this known in a recent visit to Bosun Tijani, the minister of communication, innovation, and digital economy, where he shared his vision, strategy and key priorities of the commission, while emphasising the importance of building strong and resilient telecommunication in the country.
During the visit, Maida explained that it was an important opportunity for him to discuss his vision and priorities with the Minister, as they align with the Minister’s 5-Pillar Strategic Plan. He noted that in his six weeks in the position, he has gained a comprehensive understanding of the industry and identified key issues. One of the top priorities for the Commission is to improve the quality of experience for consumers, which is a key focus of the Minister’s Strategic Plan.
The EVC further expresses his commitment in ensuring that consumers receive the best possible experience from service providers. He stressed “At the meeting with the industry leaders, we are clear that improving Quality of Experience (QoE) is a top priority. We will take compliance in this area seriously, setting clear standards for what is considered acceptable.
In addition to improving the quality of experience for consumers, the NCC is also focusing on improving broadband connectivity, which is a key enabler of the digital economy and financial inclusion. Maida noted that these priorities align with the Ministry’s 5-Pillar Agenda, which aims to promote access to broadband, digital innovation, digital transformation, e-government, and digital inclusion.
“Under my leadership, the Commission will give priorities to the improvement of our regulatory activities. With this, we hope to see more investors come into the telecommunications industry in Nigeria, with the attendant creation of vertical businesses and increased Foreign Direct Investments, revenue generation, and employment,” Maida assured.
Maida said that the NCC’s ultimate goal is to achieve optimal operational excellence, which will be the foundation for success in all other priority areas and will drive growth in the telecommunications industry.
He recalled his visit to the Digital Bridge Institute, a technology training center in Lagos, noting that he was impressed by its potential to contribute to a knowledge-based economy, which is a key goal of the Ministry’s Strategic Plan. He also expressed confidence that the institute is well-positioned to train the next generation of digital talent, which is critical for the continued growth of the digital economy.
“Consequently, we will be prioritising the revamp, retooling, and redirection of the Institute towards extracting its optimum value in line with our objectives,” the EVC said.
Tijani warmly welcomed Maida and expressed his appreciation for the NCC’s contributions to the digital transformation of Nigeria. He recognised the vital role of the NCC in achieving the country’s digital ambitions and pledged his full support and partnership with the NCC.
“The NCC is a stellar agency, and you have my respect for the work that you do. There is no future for the country without the NCC. Already, the quality you have is good; what we need to do now is to tap into this quality to bring about greater value for the country,” Tijani said.
