As cyber threats continue to rise, messaging platforms like WhatsApp are increasingly vulnerable to hacking and unauthorised access.
With millions of users across Nigeria, the popular messaging app has become a prime target for cybercriminals looking to exploit security gaps. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reports that the country loses approximately $500 million annually to various forms of cybercrime, including hacking, identity theft, and online fraud.
Additionally, a report by Check Point Software Technologies also ranked Nigeria 19th out of 112 countries experiencing a rise in cyberattacks in its Global Threat Index for July 2024.

In light of this growing concern, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued an advisory to help WhatsApp users safeguard their accounts. The advisory offers clear steps for both individual users and group administrators to secure their accounts and respond to any potential breaches.
NITDA stresses the importance of remaining vigilant while using WhatsApp to safeguard personal data. “WhatsApp is a powerful communication tool, but like all digital platforms, it requires caution and proactive security measures. Follow these simple yet vital steps to ensure your safety and protect your data,” NITDA noted.
For users who suspect their accounts have been compromised, NITDA recommends immediate action to regain control. One of the first steps is to log out of all devices to disconnect unauthorised users. “Logging out of all devices helps prevent further unauthorised access and restores control to the user,” the agency explained.
To further secure the account, NITDA suggests uninstalling and reinstalling WhatsApp to trigger a new verification process. Users should also enable two-step verification after regaining access, as it provides an added layer of security against future hacks. According to the agency, Two-step verification is one of the most effective ways to protect an account.
In the event of a hack, NITDA also advises users to inform their contacts immediately to prevent phishing attempts or further distribution of malicious content. Users should review their recent conversations for any unusual activity or messages, and if recovery efforts fail, NITDA suggests contacting WhatsApp Support directly for assistance.
The advisory also includes specific guidance for WhatsApp group administrators, who play a crucial role in protecting group chats. According to the agency, if a member’s account is compromised, administrators should promptly remove the affected member to stop the spread of unauthorised content.
NITDA recommends notifying the group about the breach to raise awareness and prevent the circulation of suspicious links or messages. Admins are encouraged to reach out to the affected member through alternate communication methods and offer advice on securing their account.
To further assist with recovery, NITDA suggests using WhatsApp’s support tools, including the “Forgot PIN” and “Request Support” options. In cases where needed, group admins may report the compromised account directly to WhatsApp for further action.
NITDA also outlines several best practices for WhatsApp users to reduce the risk of hacking:
-
Enable two-step verification – A primary security measure available in WhatsApp’s security settings, adding an extra layer of protection.
-
Be cautious with links and files – Avoid clicking on links or downloading files from unverified contacts, as they may contain malware or phishing attempts.
-
Regularly update the app – Keeping WhatsApp updated ensures users benefit from the latest security patches that address vulnerabilities.
-
Adjust privacy settings – Users should control who can see their profile photo, status, and last seen information to reduce exposure to potential threats.
-
Keep verification codes private – Never share verification codes, even with those pretending to be WhatsApp support or other trusted services.
-
Avoid using public Wi-Fi for WhatsApp – Public Wi-Fi networks are more susceptible to data breaches, making it safer to use WhatsApp on secured, private networks.
NITDA further emphasised that following these guidelines will empower users to take proactive steps in protecting their accounts, ensuring a safer and more secure digital presence.
