Have you ever found yourself stuck in a situation, feeling lost and unsure about the next step? Many of us have encountered such moments, often characterized by self-doubt and hesitation. In these moments, it’s essential to reflect on the question, “What is stopping you?” This simple yet profound query was posed by Dr. Mongezi Makhalima, the board chair of the African Board for Coaching, Consulting, and Coaching Psychology (ABCCCP), during the Coaching In Africa Symposium’s first day. In this article, we will explore the significance of this question and how it can help us break through the barriers that impede our progress.
The power of self-reflection
Dr. Makhalima’s question encourages us to engage in self-reflection, a powerful tool for personal growth and development. Self-reflection allows us to pause, take a step back, and analyse our thoughts, actions, and decisions. It provides an opportunity to gain clarity and insights into our own motivations and limitations.
Parking lot epiphany
As I approached the venue of the Coaching In Africa Symposium, a seemingly mundane incident provided a vivid illustration of the importance of self-reflection. I missed my turning and ended up at the parking bay ticketing machine. Frustrated and confused, I hesitated for a moment before clicking the “Help” button. This simple action triggered an unexpected revelation. “H.E.L.P,” it stood for “Hello Expert Leadership Professional.” In my moment of panic, I was seeking guidance and expertise to navigate my way. This incident served as a stark reminder of the human brain’s tendency to grasp for assistance when faced with uncertainty.
The human brain in panic mode
When confronted with unfamiliar or challenging situations, our brains often enter “panic mode.” This state is characterised by heightened stress and anxiety, which can cloud our judgment and decision-making abilities. In such moments, we may be inclined to seek external guidance or validation, as I did at the parking bay. However, understanding the workings of our brains in these situations can empower us to overcome the obstacles that are stopping us.
Identifying barriers
To address what is stopping us, we must first identify the barriers that stand in our way. These barriers can take various forms, including fear, self-doubt, lack of knowledge, or external circumstances. When you find yourself facing a challenge, take a moment to ask yourself, “What is stopping me?” This question can serve as a compass, guiding you to the root causes of your hesitations and uncertainties.
Fear and self-doubt
Fear and self-doubt are two of the most common barriers that hold people back from pursuing their goals and aspirations. When you ask yourself what is stopping you, you may find that it’s your own inner critic, the voice that tells you that you’re not good enough or capable enough. These negative self-perceptions can be paralyzing, preventing you from taking the necessary steps toward your dreams.
Lack of knowledge
Sometimes, what is stopping you is a lack of knowledge or information. In today’s rapidly changing world, staying informed and acquiring new skills is crucial. If you find yourself hesitating due to a knowledge gap, consider it an opportunity to learn and grow. Seek out resources, courses, or mentors who can provide the expertise you need to move forward.
External circumstances
External circumstances can also act as barriers to your progress. These might include financial constraints, family responsibilities, or unexpected life events. When faced with external obstacles, it’s essential to assess your options and find creative solutions. Dr. Makhalima’s question can prompt you to explore ways to navigate these challenges effectively.
Empowering solutions
Once you’ve identified what is stopping you, the next step is to develop solutions and strategies to overcome these barriers. Empower yourself with the knowledge and tools needed to tackle your obstacles head-on. Whether it’s seeking personal development resources, addressing your fears through self-confidence exercises, or finding innovative ways to work around external circumstances, taking action is key to progress.
Goal setting and accountability
Setting clear goals and creating a roadmap for achieving them is a powerful way to move past the obstacles that have been holding you back. By establishing specific objectives and deadlines, you provide yourself with a sense of purpose and direction. Additionally, holding yourself accountable for your progress can help you stay motivated and focused on your journey.
Conclusion
The question, “What is stopping you?” serves as a catalyst for self-reflection and personal growth. It prompts us to examine the barriers that stand in our way and empowers us to overcome them. By understanding the power of self-reflection and the tendencies of the human brain in moments of panic, we can develop strategies to address fear, self-doubt, knowledge gaps, and external circumstances. With clear goals, accountability, and a commitment to personal development, we can break through the barriers that have been stopping us and embark on a path of growth and fulfilment. So, the next time you find yourself hesitating or feeling lost, ask yourself, “What is stopping me?” You may be surprised at the transformative answers that emerge.
