The United Bank for Africa Foundation has unveiled a tree-planting campaign with a pledge to plant one million trees across the African continent.

The initiative, tagged “Our Land: Grooming a Greener Future”, was launched recently at a tree-planting event held at the UBA Foundation Garden in Lagos,

Oliver Alawuba, the group managing director/chief executive officer of UBA, underscored the importance of the campaign, stating, “We must work to save the planet, and we commit that UBA will plant one million trees across Africa by the end of 2024.

“Trees provide more than carbon reduction; urban trees can decrease temperature by at least 12 degrees Celsius, significantly lowering the risk of heat-related crises. Each tree we plant today contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 11.”

In his remarks, Kennedy Uzoka,UBA Foundation chairman, underscored the campaign’s support for global sustainability initiatives. He stressed the ease and accessibility of planting trees, highlighting the simplicity and lack of specialized skill required for this activity. Uzoka emphasised that anyone could contribute to a healthier environment by planting trees in their own homes or workplaces, thereby promoting a greener future for Africa.

Also speaking, Bola Atta, chief executive officer of the UBA Foundation, highlighted the critical role of tree planting in combating climate change.

“This building is a significant milestone in our journey of growth and innovation. It symbolises our dedication to providing unparalleled financial solutions that meet the evolving needs of our clients and customers. We believe this new space will inspire creativity and drive us to exceed expectations.

“Our solid track record in the financial industry has paved the way for this remarkable achievement. This building is not just a home for our operations; it is a beacon of our future aspirations, designed to support our long-term vision of becoming a leader in the global financial market,” Atta remarked.

The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) applauded UBA Foundation’s efforts to promote a sustainable future through tree planting.

Representing LASPARK, Funto Aina remarked, “UBA Foundation’s efforts align with Lagos State’s theme of nurturing the future through tree planting. We commend their commitment and encourage other corporate organisations to follow suit.”
