NCC identifies telecoms as major driver of Nigeria’s digital economy

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a directive to all licensed operators to update their contact information on or before January 9, 2025.

This development aligns with the Commission’s Licensing Regulations 2019, and the move is aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight and streamlining communication between the NCC and licensed operators.

A statement issued by Reuben Mouka, director of public affairs at the NCC, noted that licensed operators are obligated to report any changes to their contact information within seven days of the occurrence, using the Commission’s eServices platform at https://eservices.ncc.gov.ng.

The NCC outlined the required updates to include:

Principal place of business: Including the postcode, geographic coordinates, and identifiable landmarks.

Mailing address: If different from the physical location.

Email contacts: Active and current addresses for effective communication.

Contact numbers: Reachable and updated phone numbers.

Personnel information: Names and details of individuals responsible for regulatory and operational matters.

The NCC, in a warning to licensed operators, stated that failure to provide accurate and timely updates to their contact information could lead to severe sanctions, including fines, licence suspensions, or even licence revocation.

Although the NCC did not specify the exact penalties that would be imposed for non-compliance, it emphasised the important role accurate contact information plays in enabling swift responses to industry developments and facilitating effective engagement with the commission.

“This directive is part of the NCC’s broader strategy to improve its regulatory framework, strengthen oversight, and bolster Nigeria’s telecommunications sector. By leveraging the eServices platform, the Commission aims to provide licensees with a secure and efficient means to fulfill their regulatory obligations,” the commission stated.

The NCC, in the statement, urged licensees to adhere to the directive without delay, emphasising the importance of prompt compliance in ensuring the smooth functioning of their operations.

The commission also underscored the critical role that accurate contact information plays in promoting transparency and accountability, which are integral to the long-term success and sustainability of the telecommunications industry in Nigeria.
