FG approves projects to expand internet access, AI growth

The Federal Government has approved two major initiatives—the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project and the National Artificial Intelligence Trust as part of its broader strategy to accelerate digital transformation in the country.

Bosun Tijani, the minister of communications, innovation, and digital economy, announced the approvals following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, stating that these projects align with the administration’s vision to expand digital infrastructure and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global technology landscape.

Under the FEC’s approval, the Nigeria Universal Communication Access Project will be established through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) funding model. Tijani explained that this initiative is an extension of the Infrastructure pillar in the Ministry’s Strategic Blueprint and supports Project Bridge, the government’s ambitious plan to deploy 90,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable nationwide.

According to the minister, the project aims to provide mobile connectivity to more than 21 million people in 4,834 communities currently lacking basic telecommunications services, particularly in remote and rural areas.

“Many of us take connectivity for granted, but this initiative will ensure that additional base stations are deployed to bridge the gap, improving the quality of life for millions of Nigerians,” Tijani stated.

The second approval granted by the FEC is for the establishment of the National Artificial Intelligence Trust, which Tijani described as the first of its kind initiative. The Trust will comprise 10 AI experts, alongside the ministers of communications, innovation and digital economy, and science, innovation, and technology.

Tasked with mobilising resources and providing oversight, the Trust will guide the development of AI in Nigeria to ensure that investments in the sector are strategically aligned with the country’s economic priorities.

The minister emphasised that the Trust will play a crucial role in leveraging AI to drive job creation, attract foreign investment, and establish Nigeria as a key player in the global AI ecosystem.

Tijani underscored the potential of AI to revolutionise sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and finance. He added that prioritising both digital connectivity and AI development will foster a more inclusive digital economy, empowering Nigerians and supporting long-term economic growth.

“Our goal is to secure Nigeria’s place in the future of AI while harnessing its potential to create jobs and attract foreign investment,” Tijani added.
