Sade Williams/Business a.m.

Aero Contractors has paid the sum of N257,195,724.39 in refund to passengers in the first eight months of 2025, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) data has shown.

This disclosure was made in a post shared on the NCAA’s spokesman’s official X account, Michael Achimugu, (@mikeachimugu01) on Friday stressing the Authority’s ongoing efforts to ensure that airlines comply with passenger protection obligations.

The NCAA provided a breakdown of the refunds highlighting the refund activity during the period of the year.

According to Achimugu, the payment represents 137 percent growth in 2024 compared to previous years.

Total refund paid between January  and August 2025  was N257,195,724.39 compared to N108,308,037.40  over the same period 2024 and N32,766,652.30 in 2023.

For Hotel accommodation in 2025,  total amount reported from January till July 2025 was N6, 083,229 (verified records with Cocos Hotel, Grand Cubana Hotel, Abuja, NOCY Castle Hotel, Kim Royal Hotel, JC42 Apartment (Asaba), Mayor & Diplomat Hotel, Lagos.

“The figures above show that there is a remarkable improvement in compliance with Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023. While acknowledging the peculiar challenges of our operating environment, the Authority will continue to protect the rights of all stakeholders.”, he said.

Achimugu disclosed that these figures cut across most of the airlines, adding, ‘this is one of our proudest achievements, knowing that way more passengers are being protected now than ever before, in the 25-year history of the NCAA.

He noted that just as the Authority protects the passengers, it must in the same vein, protect airline staff and cabin crew against every form of violence and assault.

Recall that the NCAA has said it will sanction airlines that fail to refund passengers within 14 days after flight cancellations or delays, especially when the request for refunds is made by affected passengers.
