League of Nigerian Columnists to meet on Sonala Olumense case

The League of Nigerian Columnists (LNC) has announced plans to hold its first quarterly meeting of 2026 to examine the implications of the ongoing public and legal discourse surrounding the Sonala Olumense case.

The meeting, scheduled for Sunday, March 22, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., will bring together members of the League to reflect on the responsibilities and liabilities of columnists within Nigeria’s evolving media, legal and democratic environment.

In a statement issued by Anthony Kila, the LNC secretary general, the League said the session would provide a measured and professional platform for examining the intersection of opinion writing, legal accountability and public responsibility.

“Opinion writing occupies a vital space in democratic societies. It allows for interpretation, critique and engagement. However, it also carries responsibilities—legal, ethical and professional—which must be continually examined in light of changing realities,” Kila said.

The LNC stressed that the meeting is not intended to prejudge or comment on the merits of any ongoing legal proceedings, but rather to use the moment as an opportunity for reflection, professional development and collective learning within the column-writing community.

Reaffirming its commitment to responsible and informed commentary, the LNC emphasised the importance of intellectual rigour and professional integrity, while also underscoring the need to preserve the space for free and robust public debate.

The outcome of the meeting, the League said, is expected to contribute to broader national conversations on media responsibility and the future of opinion writing in Nigeria.
