OPay, NATOP alliance targets cashless revolution in tourism

The drive to modernise Nigeria’s tourism economy received fresh momentum as fintech company OPay entered into a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Association of Tour Operators (NATOP) to accelerate digital payments, improve operational efficiency and expand market opportunities for businesses across the travel and hospitality value chain.

The collaboration reflects the growing role of financial technology in supporting tourism development, with seamless digital transactions increasingly regarded as critical infrastructure for attracting visitors, improving customer experience and strengthening the competitiveness of destination economies.

Announced recently during NATOP’s 10th Annual General Meeting in Lagos, the initiative will introduce digital payment solutions tailored to tour operators, hotels, travel agencies and other hospitality businesses, helping them reduce reliance on cash transactions while improving operational efficiency and customer experience.

Beyond simplifying payments, the partnership is expected to expand digital visibility for tourism operators, improve financial inclusion within the sector and create new opportunities for businesses seeking to attract both domestic and international travellers.

Digital infrastructure for tourism growth

As Nigeria intensifies efforts to diversify its economy beyond oil, tourism has emerged as one of the sectors with significant growth potential. However, industry operators have long identified fragmented payment systems and limited digital integration as barriers to attracting international visitors and improving service delivery.

OPay’s partnership with NATOP seeks to address those challenges by providing payment infrastructure capable of supporting secure, real-time transactions across the tourism value chain.

Speaking at the event, Chukwudimma Ezembamalu, director of payments and acquiring (Key accounts & hospitality) at OPay, said the partnership is designed to build payment solutions that respond to both domestic and international requirements of Nigeria’s travel industry.

According to him, the objective is to help tourism businesses modernise their operations while making payment processes simpler and more convenient for visitors.

OHotel platform expands digital marketplace

A major feature of the initiative is the introduction of OHotel, OPay’s upcoming hospitality platform built around the concept of “Get discovered, get booked and get paid.”

The platform will allow hotels and other hospitality businesses to showcase their services directly on the OPay application, providing exposure to the company’s more than 45 million active users.

The initiative effectively transforms the fintech platform into an additional digital marketplace for hospitality operators, potentially expanding customer reach while creating new booking opportunities.

Ezembamalu also disclosed that OPay has deployed international card acceptance capabilities, enabling inbound foreign tourists to make payments more easily when accessing accommodation and other hospitality services in Nigeria.

According to OPay, its payment solutions are designed to simplify transactions, improve record keeping, accelerate settlement cycles and reduce the operational risks associated with cash-based transactions.

The company’s payment infrastructure, which operates with a reported 99.9 per cent uptime, is expected to provide reliable transaction processing for businesses operating within the tourism and hospitality sector.

Stakeholders at the association’s annual meeting highlighted technology and innovation as critical enablers of tourism expansion, particularly as global travellers increasingly prioritise convenience, speed and digital accessibility when selecting destinations.

As competition among tourism destinations intensifies, industry observers say investments in digital infrastructure, including secure payment systems, will become increasingly important in improving Nigeria’s attractiveness as a travel destination.

The OPay-NATOP collaboration therefore represents more than a payment partnership. It showcases how financial technology is becoming an integral part of tourism development, helping businesses improve efficiency, broaden market access and position Nigeria’s hospitality industry for sustained long-term growth.
