AI redefines competition in global online travel market

Artificial intelligence is rapidly redefining competition in the global online travel market, with companies increasingly shifting their focus from simply listing accommodation to delivering personalised recommendations powered by customer data and machine learning.

The trend gained fresh momentum after Canadian travel technology company TravelAI acquired the Sonder brand and digital assets, positioning itself to build an artificial intelligence-driven accommodation platform that learns travellers’ preferences and recommends properties tailored to individual tastes.

The acquisition, completed through a court-supervised bankruptcy process in Canada, included the Sonder name, trademarks and digital assets, including Sonder.com, but excluded the company’s hotels, apartment portfolio, employees, leases and accommodation operations.

Rather than becoming a hotel operator, TravelAI plans to transform Sonder into a technology platform that uses artificial intelligence to personalise accommodation discovery.

The company said its platform is being designed to remember travellers’ booking history, preferred accommodation styles, destinations and other behavioural patterns, enabling more relevant recommendations each time users plan a trip.

The strategy reflects an evolution within the travel technology industry, where companies are increasingly competing through intelligent digital experiences instead of the size of their accommodation inventories.

TravelAI has relaunched Sonder.com as an accommodation discovery platform featuring apartment-style accommodation, boutique hotels and professionally managed homes sourced through distribution partners.

John Lyotier, chief executive officer and co-founder of TravelAI, said acquiring the Sonder brand gives the company an opportunity to combine an established travel name with next-generation artificial intelligence capabilities.

According to him, millions of travellers already recognise and trust the Sonder brand, providing a strong foundation for building a personalised accommodation platform powered by AI.

Founded in Montreal in 2014, Sonder built its reputation by offering professionally managed apartments and boutique hotels in major international cities including New York, London, Barcelona, Miami and Dubai.

The company expanded rapidly and later listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market before financial challenges culminated in parts of its Canadian operations entering bankruptcy after Marriott International ended its partnership with the business in 2025.

Although Sonder’s accommodation business ceased operating, its intellectual property, trademarks and digital identity retained considerable commercial value, highlighting the growing importance of brands and digital assets in the technology economy.

Industry analysts say the acquisition illustrates how recognised consumer brands can remain valuable long after the underlying operating business has failed, particularly when they possess strong customer recognition and digital reach.

The development also reflects wider changes across the online travel industry, where artificial intelligence is becoming central to customer acquisition, retention and revenue growth.

Global travel platforms are investing heavily in AI technologies capable of analysing user behaviour, predicting travel preferences and delivering increasingly personalised booking experiences.

Rather than competing solely on price or the number of hotels available, travel technology companies are seeking competitive advantage through recommendation engines that improve customer engagement and encourage repeat bookings.

The development carries implications for emerging travel markets, including Nigeria and the wider African region, where digital adoption continues to transform how consumers research and book accommodation.

As more travellers rely on online platforms for domestic and international travel, companies capable of combining trusted brands with intelligent recommendation technology are expected to strengthen their market position.
