From rice and maize to cassava, cocoa, and tomatoes, Nigerian farmers produce a wide variety of crops that feed the nation and support exports. Yet despite its importance, the agricultural sector continues to face major challenges, including low productivity, unpredictable weather, crop diseases, poor access to finance, post-harvest losses, and inefficient supply chains.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to change this narrative.
Around the world, AI is transforming agriculture by helping farmers make better decisions, improve yields, reduce waste, and increase profitability. As these technologies become more affordable and accessible, Nigerian farmers and agribusinesses have an opportunity to modernise farming and strengthen food security.

Access to finance remains one of the greatest barriers facing Nigerian farmers, particularly smallholder producers.
Many financial institutions hesitate to provide loans because farmers often lack formal credit histories or collateral. AI offers new ways to assess creditworthiness by analysing alternative data such as farm productivity, transaction records, satellite imagery, mobile payment history, and previous harvest performance.
