Meta to charge Nigerian businesses for WhatsApp service message

Meta to charge Nigerian businesses for WhatsApp service message

Meta will begin charging businesses for service and certain utility messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform from October 1, 2026, a move that could raise communication costs for Nigerian banks, fintechs, e-commerce companies, logistics firms and other businesses that use the platform to engage customers at scale.

The company announced the change in a July 2026 update to its WhatsApp Business Platform pricing, saying service messages would move to a per-message pricing model from October 1.

The new charges apply to businesses using the official WhatsApp Business Platform, formerly known as the WhatsApp Business API. They do not affect ordinary WhatsApp users or most small businesses using the standard WhatsApp Business app.

Under the current system, businesses can respond to customers with free-form service messages during a 24-hour customer service window without paying Meta for those messages. From October 1, service messages sent during the window will become chargeable.

Meta will also begin charging for utility messages sent in response to customers during the 24-hour window. These include payment confirmations, order updates and delivery notifications, which have previously been free under the platform’s pricing structure.

In its developer documentation, Meta said the new service-message charge would apply from October 1, noting that such messages had not been charged since November 1, 2024. It also said utility messages had been free since July 1, 2025.

For Nigerian businesses, a chargeable service or utility message is expected to cost about $0.0101, equivalent to approximately ₦14 at an exchange rate of ₦1,340 to the dollar. Marketing messages are priced significantly higher at about $0.062, or roughly ₦84 at the same exchange rate.

The fees are paid directly to Meta and may not represent the total cost to businesses. Companies accessing the WhatsApp Business Platform through Business Solution Providers or other third-party platforms could incur additional charges.

The impact could be significant for businesses handling large volumes of customer communication.

Meta has also asked businesses and Solution Providers to add a valid payment method ahead of the change. It warned that accounts without a payment method by September 30 could have their service messages stopped once the new charges take effect.

The pricing change comes as WhatsApp continues to serve as an important customer communication channel for Nigeria’s financial services and digital commerce sectors.

Banks and fintechs use the platform for customer support and transaction-related communications, while e-commerce, logistics and retail businesses rely on it for order and delivery updates and other customer interactions.

For high-volume users, the new pricing structure could prompt businesses to review how they use WhatsApp for customer communication and assess the cost implications of sending large volumes of transactional messages.

Yellow Card powers Tranzmit’s stablecoin settlement for US-Nigeria payments

Tranzmit Payment Services, a subsidiary of US-based Tranzmit Corporation, has integrated Yellow Card’s Payments API to facilitate stablecoin-powered settlements for cross-border payments, beginning with its US-Nigeria corridor.

The partnership gives Tranzmit’s US operations a direct settlement route into Nigeria through Yellow Card’s stablecoin infrastructure, allowing the company to convert between US dollar-pegged stablecoins and local currency for payments into emerging markets.

The integration comes as payment companies seek alternatives to traditional correspondent banking channels, which can add complexity, costs and delays to cross-border transactions, particularly in markets where access to US dollars can be constrained and local currencies are volatile.

Through Yellow Card’s Payments API, Tranzmit can use dollar-pegged stablecoins as part of its settlement process before converting the funds into local currency.

The companies said the arrangement is intended to make cross-border settlements faster and more predictable while reducing some of the friction associated with conventional international payment routes.

Chris Maurice, chief executive officer and co-founder of Yellow Card, said the integration would give Tranzmit’s emerging-market operations access to infrastructure designed for cross-border settlements.

“Tranzmit has been moving money and connecting people across borders for decades,” Maurice said, adding that the integration would help replace some of the friction associated with traditional settlement channels with a more streamlined infrastructure for emerging markets.

Daniel Asturias, chief executive officer of Tranzmit, said the company was focused on using financial technology to simplify international money transfers for businesses and individuals.

“At Tranzmit, we’re transforming the way money moves, making transfers simpler, smarter, and more seamless through innovative fintech technology,” Asturias said.

The US-Nigeria corridor is among Tranzmit’s largest and fastest-growing routes, according to the companies, making Nigeria the first market covered by the new settlement arrangement.

The partnership also strengthens Yellow Card’s push to provide payment infrastructure for companies seeking to expand cross-border financial services in emerging markets.

Yellow Card said its Payments API is designed to enable global payment companies to access stablecoin-based settlement infrastructure without relying entirely on traditional correspondent banking networks.

The integration comes amid growing interest in stablecoins as an infrastructure layer for international payments, particularly for transactions involving markets where foreign exchange liquidity, currency volatility and conventional banking infrastructure can create settlement challenges.
