OPay has dismissed as false and misleading a publication circulating across social media claiming that the financial technology company would commence an indefinite operational break from September 1, 2026, urging customers to disregard the information and avoid taking financial decisions based on the claim.
The company said it remains fully operational and that its services continue as normal, moving to reassure customers amid concerns that the circulating message could trigger unnecessary withdrawals and fund transfers.
The false publication had advised OPay customers to withdraw or transfer their funds ahead of the purported shutdown, raising concerns about the potential impact of misinformation on consumer confidence in digital financial services.
In a statement, OPay described the circulating report as fabricated and said it did not originate from any of the company’s official communication channels.
“We are aware of a false and misleading publication circulating across social media claiming that OPay will be going on an indefinite break from September 1, 2026, and advising customers to withdraw or transfer their funds,” the company said.
“This claim is completely false. OPay is not going on any break. We remain fully operational, and our services continue as normal,” it added.
The company urged customers to disregard the publication and cautioned against taking action based on the misinformation.
The incident underscores the growing challenge facing financial technology companies as social media increasingly becomes a channel through which unverified claims about banks, payment platforms and other financial institutions can gain rapid traction.
OPay said the publication was not an official communication and advised customers to verify information relating to the company through its established and verified communication channels before sharing or acting on such information.
“Our verified platforms remain the trusted source for announcements and updates about our services,” the company said.
The company urged customers and the general public to exercise caution when encountering information about its operations and to rely only on its official channels for verified announcements.
