From SS1 scholar to Nigeria’s law school top student: How foundation’s long-term support shaped Adeniyi’s journey

L-R: Segun Oyin Jolayemi, director, Daily Need Group; Theodore Ojiako, head, Private Trust Services, UTL Trust Management Services Limited; Oyin Jolayemi, founder, Oyin Jolayemi Foundation; Adeniyi Israel Adekunle, 2026 best graduating student at the Nigerian Law School;Olufunke Aiyepola, MD/CE, UTL Trust Management Services Limited, and Oluwatobi Egbeyemi, head of investment, UTL Trust Management Services Limited, during the presentation of an Award of Excellence to Adeniyi Israel Adekunle, a long-time beneficiary of Oyin Jolayemi Foundation, which is being managed and administered by UTL Trust Management Services Limited

For Adeniyi Israel Adekunle, emerging as the Overall Best Graduating Student of the Nigerian Law School in the 2026 Call to Bar is more than an academic triumph. It is the culmination of more than a decade of sustained educational support that began when he was a Senior Secondary School student and helped remove the cost of education, considered one of the most worrisome obstacles confronting many talented young Nigerians.

Adekunle, who also graduated as the best student in the Common Law programme at the University of Ilorin with a CGPA of 4.83, the highest ever recorded in the faculty’s history, has credited the Oyin Jolayemi Foundation and UTL Trust Management Services Limited, trustee to the Foundation, with playing a defining role in his journey from SS1 through university and the Nigerian Law School.

The Foundation, a private philanthropic organisation focused on expanding access to educational opportunities for Nigerians, recently honoured Adekunle in recognition of his exceptional academic achievements.

For the young lawyer, the recognition represented more than another award. It showcased the transformative power of timely intervention, sustained financial support and long-term investment in human capital.

Adekunle became a beneficiary of the Foundation’s scholarship programme while in Senior Secondary School 1. The support continued through his university education and the Nigerian Law School, enabling him to pursue his ambitions without the financial pressures that often force academically gifted young people to defer, abandon or compromise their educational aspirations.

His story brings renewed attention to the role of organised philanthropy and professional wealth management in addressing Nigeria’s human capital development challenge.

For the Oyin Jolayemi Foundation, Adekunle’s achievement reflects the outcome its educational interventions are designed to produce, not merely helping students remain in school, but supporting them with the moral encouragement and professional guidance required to compete, excel and build sustainable careers.

Oyin Jolayemi, founder of the Foundation, congratulated Adekunle on his achievement and urged him to sustain the high standards that earned him national recognition.

Olufunke Aiyepola, managing director/chief executive officer of UTL Trust Management Services Limited, also congratulated him, describing the achievement as a source of pride for the Foundation.

Aiyepola encouraged Adekunle to remain committed to excellence as he begins his professional career and commended Jolayemi for his sustained contribution to improving the lives and prospects of the Foundation’s beneficiaries.

A foundation provides a structured platform through which philanthropists can direct resources towards causes that matter to them, including education, healthcare and community development. Such structures are typically supported by trustees who provide governance, advisory and administrative expertise to help ensure that philanthropic objectives are effectively pursued over the long term.

Adekunle’s journey offers a compelling example of what can emerge when philanthropy moves beyond one-off donations to sustained investment in individual potential.

As he begins his legal career, Adekunle said he sees his latest achievement not as the destination but as the beginning of a broader professional journey.

His ambition, he said, is to become not only a better lawyer but also a thought leader, writer, speaker and mentor to younger Nigerians.

For the Oyin Jolayemi Foundation and its trustees, his success provides a powerful measure of the potential returns on long-term investment in education.
