Global spending on private LTE and 5G networks is projected to nearly quintuple over the next five years as businesses pour billions of dollars into dedicated connectivity to support artificial intelligence, automation and increasingly data-intensive industrial operations.
Spending is expected to climb from $17.3 billion in 2026 to $84.7 billion by 2031, representing growth of almost 400 percent, according to new research by Juniper Research.
The forecast points to a rapidly expanding investment market for telecommunications operators, network-equipment manufacturers and technology companies as enterprises increasingly treat connectivity infrastructure as a core component of their digital transformation strategies.
Juniper said the growth will be driven in part by the rapid expansion of AI systems across businesses. As companies deploy AI for industrial control, machine vision, predictive maintenance and automated operations, the demand for robust, dedicated connectivity is increasing.
The shift could create a major new revenue pool for network vendors at a time when traditional telecommunications markets are under pressure to find higher-value enterprise services beyond conventional connectivity.
“Network performance in itself will be insufficient as a differentiator,” said Nick Maynard, vice president of research at Juniper Research.
He said leading providers would increasingly need to develop architectures tailored to individual industries and built around operational-technology and mission-critical applications.
Private cellular networks allow enterprises to operate dedicated LTE or 5G infrastructure within facilities such as factories, ports, mines, warehouses and other industrial environments. Unlike conventional public mobile networks, private networks can be configured around the specific security, reliability, latency and operational requirements of an enterprise.
That makes them increasingly relevant to the economics of Industry 4.0, where production lines, autonomous vehicles, robotics, sensors and AI systems must exchange large volumes of data with minimal disruption.
Juniper’s forecast suggests the opportunity will extend well beyond telecommunications equipment. As private networks become part of wider industrial automation projects, spending could flow across network infrastructure, software, systems integration, cybersecurity and specialised enterprise applications.
The research identifies Nokia, Huawei, Samsung, HPE and Ericsson among the leading vendors in its 2026 competitor assessment. Juniper said the companies are increasingly moving away from broad enterprise connectivity propositions towards solutions designed for specific industrial environments.
For vendors, that creates both an opportunity and a strategic challenge. The projected expansion in spending could open a substantial enterprise market, but capturing it may require deeper partnerships with manufacturers, logistics operators, energy companies and other industrial users rather than relying solely on traditional telecoms sales channels.
Juniper recommends that private-network providers strengthen partnerships with enterprise AI vendors and position private cellular infrastructure as part of broader AI-modernisation programmes.
The recommendation reflects a wider change in how companies are approaching AI investment. Rather than treating AI as a standalone software purchase, businesses increasingly need supporting infrastructure capable of moving data between machines, sensors, workers and computing systems in real time.
For industrial companies, the investment case therefore extends beyond faster connectivity. Private networks can underpin automated guided vehicles, machine-vision systems, predictive-maintenance programmes and industrial control operations — applications that Juniper identifies as increasingly important to enterprise deployments.
The research is based on a five-year market forecast containing 98,500 datapoints and a competitive assessment of 13 private LTE and 5G network providers.
The projected rise to $84.7 billion by 2031 signals that private cellular networks are moving from a specialist connectivity proposition towards a potentially significant component of global corporate technology spending.
For the telecoms industry, the prize is not simply selling more network equipment. It is capturing a share of the much larger investment wave being created as businesses connect AI, automation and physical industrial assets.
