NIBSS highlights role of enhanced security tools in digital payments

NIBSS highlights role of enhanced security tools in digital payments

Rising exposure to social engineering and account takeover attacks is forcing Nigeria’s payments industry to rethink how customers are protected as digital transactions become more widespread.

Payment providers are increasingly deploying integrated security controls that allow customers to detect suspicious activity, restrict transactions and respond more quickly to potential fraud, reflecting the growing risks accompanying the country’s digital finance expansion.

The development has placed renewed attention on the security architecture supporting Nigeria’s digital payments market, particularly as more consumers rely on mobile applications and electronic channels for everyday financial transactions.

Tosin Obadimu, head of the Fraud Management Department at the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) Plc, said integrated security controls could strengthen the verification of high-risk transactions and improve the speed at which fraud incidents are reported and resolved.

His comments followed the unveiling of an upgraded Security Center by PalmPay under its “PalmPay Dey For You” consumer protection campaign.

The platform consolidates a range of account and transaction safeguards, including real-time security checks, Large Transaction Shield, Night Guard, USSD account and card lock, as well as alerts for suspected fraud recipients, duplicate transfers and new-device logins.

According to Obadimu, bringing multiple controls into a single platform can provide an additional layer of protection against social engineering and account takeover.

“PalmPay’s upgraded Security Center brings account and transaction protection into a single hub,” he said, adding that the tools could strengthen verification before high-risk transactions.

He also said integrated dispute resolution, fraud reporting and case-tracking capabilities could help accelerate incident reporting and improve the prospects of fund recovery across the payments ecosystem.

The increasing sophistication of digital fraud is changing the risk profile faced by customers as payment services become more embedded in everyday economic activity.

Rather than relying solely on technical vulnerabilities, social engineering attacks can manipulate customers into authorising transactions or revealing information that enables unauthorised access to accounts.

Impersonation, fraudulent communications and unauthorised access have consequently become important areas of focus for financial institutions and payment providers seeking to strengthen consumer protection.

The development means that fraud prevention increasingly requires a combination of technology, transaction controls and customer awareness.

PalmPay’s security upgrade reflects that approach by combining automated monitoring with controls that allow customers to impose restrictions on their own accounts and transactions.

Samuel Oluyemi, chief operating officer of PalmPay Nigeria, said the changing behaviour of financial-services users meant that fraud-management systems would need to evolve continuously.

“With my over 2 and a half decades in Nigeria’s payments ecosystem, I understand that fraud management requires continuous innovation and empathy for the customer above profitability,” Oluyemi said.

He said customer protection would have to evolve alongside changing financial-services needs and transaction channels.

“At PalmPay, innovation is about solving real problems for Nigerians and giving them greater confidence to bank with us. That is what PalmPay Dey For You represents — putting customer protection at the heart of the customer’s experience,” he added.

The company said the campaign would also focus on educating customers about common fraud techniques, particularly impersonation, while encouraging users to adopt precautionary measures when conducting digital transactions.

The development comes as Nigeria’s payments industry continues to expand its digital footprint, increasing the importance of maintaining trust and security across mobile payments, electronic transfers, cards and other digital channels.
