Tripoli’s Mitiga airport resumes operations after 2-weeks of closure

Mitiga International Airport located in Libyan capital Tripoli has been reopened after a two-week closure due to clashes between rival militia groups.

The announcement of its reopening is a confirmation that the current ceasefire in the capital is holding.

“Airlines are expected to resume their flights starting at the beginning of next week,” according to the airport’s Facebook page.

All operations at the airport were suspended after several artillery shells fell in the area On September 12.

The militias reportedly agreed on Tuesday, to a new ceasefire that immediately resulted in two formations leaving the capital, where their attacks had caused at least 115 deaths and 560 wounded.

Libya has remained dogged by turmoil since 2011, when a bloody NATO-backed uprising led to the ouster and death of long-serving President Muammar Gaddafi after more than four decades in power.

The country’s stark political divisions have since then yielded two rival seats of power, one in Tobruk and another in Tripoli, and a host of heavily armed militia groups.
