Rivers state wins 2019 Lafarge Africa national literacy competition

After having the highest overall score, Rivers state was crowned winners of the 6th edition Lafarge Africa National literacy competition.

The grand finale of nationwide literacy competition, which took place in Lagos, witnessed a spectacular performance from Emmanuelle Nuakuadeekari and Prosper Barikpoe, representatives of Rivers, as they trounced more than 16,000 other pupils on their way to becoming champions.

Speaking at the event, Mobolaji Balogun, chairman of Lafarge Africa,  expressed his delight towards the successes recorded by the event over the years and he reiterated that Lafarge Africa will continue to help tackle the issue of illiteracy in the country.

Balogun said, “We are at Lafarge Africa understand that the government cannot do it all by themsleve, at the same time, we recognise the importance of education and the need to close the illiteracy gap in Nigeria,  that is why the Lafarge Africa National Literacy Competition is very important to us.”

Michel Puchercos, MD/CEO, Lafarge Africa said, “At Lafarge Africa we have hinged the company’s overall sustainable development strategy on four cornerstones, which are climate, circular economy, water and nature, and people and communities.”

“The Lafarge Africa National Literary Competition fall in the “people and communities” pillar of our sustainable development strategy and that is why we have put in so much into this competition to grow the future minds of this country,” he added.

Closely behind 1st place Rivers, was Ogun state, which came in 2nd position, while Enugu settled in 3rd.
