Huawei has partnered with leading digital payment company, Mondia Pay, to offer contactless payment services for its users in the Middle East and Africa region, according to information made available to Business A.M.
The new partnership now makes it possible for users of Huawei smartphones and its HONOR subsidiary in over 20 countries, including Nigeria, to make secure cashless payments without a need for ATM cards.
Under the new arrangement, Huawei will now offer Direct Carrier Billing (DCB), through its Huawei Mobile Services (HMS).
Direct Carrier billing is a digital payment method that allows users pay for goods and services by charging their phone bill or airtime.
Reacting to the development, Simon Rahmann, the CEO of Mondia Pay said: “This new partnership with Huawei is an endorsement of Mondia Pay’s industry expertise and deep routed knowledge of Africa. Customers across the continent will benefit from our fully integrated digital payment technology to make frictionless payments in a fast, safe and secure manner. We also support the natural progression towards cashless societies, fast-tracked by current affairs such as COVID-19.”
Adam Xiao, managing director at Huawei Mobile Services and Consumer Cloud Service in the MEA region, in his own reaction said: “We welcome the opportunity to partner with Mondia Pay to provide our users across the MEA region with even more payment options. Mondia Pay allows for contactless payment without the need for bank cards in a safe and secure manner that protects the privacy of users. This partnership is part of Huawei’s ongoing commitment to make it easier for local and global developers to offer their services to millions more people in the MEA region.”
According to data by the World Bank, internet subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa has grown four times bigger than it was in 2010. It is believed that innovative digital payments solutions can help boost financial inclusion on the continent.
