Lasaco Assurance appoints former commissioner as non-executive director

Maria Olateju Phillips, a former commissioner in Lagos State, has been appointed to the board of directors of LASACO Assurance Plc as a non-executive director. Her appointed, announced by the company followed the resignation on September 8 this year of Aderinola Disu, the former chairman of the board of directors.

Her appointment was made along with that of Prince Jamiu Adio Saka, also as a non-executive director, after the company received the provisional approval from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM).

In a disclosure titled “notification of resignation, and appointment of directors”, signed by Gertrude Olutekunbi, the company secretary and legal adviser and filed with the Nigerian Stock Exchange at the weekend, the company said the appointment of the two new directors into the company’s board was as a result of their wealth of experiences in several executive positions in different financial institutions as well as the recent resignation of the company’s board chairman.

The statement obtained by Business A.M. reads: “We wish to inform our esteemed shareholders and the general public that our former chairman, Aderinola Disu, resigned as a director on the board of Lasaco Assurance Plc. The resignation takes effect from 8th September 2020. “We wish to also inform all our esteemed shareholders and the investing public that the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has given provisional approval for the appointment of the following directors: Maria Olateju Phillips and Prince Jamiu Adio Saka as non-executive directors.”

The new non-executive directors: Teju Phillips is a successful chartered accountant who holds an ACCA from England and Wales. She speaks Yoruba, English and French fluently. She is a former director in Keystone Bank; former director, Lagos State Lottery Board; Honorable Commissioner For Special Duties & InterGovernmental Relations in Lagos State; she was also the managing director of Alma Beach Estate Ltd (a subsidiary of Rims Merchant Bank Ltd); managing director, Maridot Ventures Ltd.

She is also a renowned management/financial consultant to many companies and was at a time, the divisional commercial manager of property division of the United African Company (UAC) of Nig. Plc. Prince Jamiu Adio Saka is an accomplished insurance professional having practised in Canada and Nigeria career-wise and now as a Broker spanning over thirty years. He brings to the board his wealth of experience.
