Nurturing values-based leadership

Embarking on a reflective journey spanning two decades, I find myself indebted to the profound teachings in values-based leadership bestowed upon me by my esteemed Values mentor, Professor Pat Utomi,  founder, Centre For Values In Leadership. Each year, I initiated my path with a session on Leadership Values alignment, laying the groundwork for the months ahead.

One indelible moment that stands out occurred during a session when Professor Utomi shared a poignant anecdote about Mahatma Gandhi, illuminating the very essence of leadership through the lens of values.

In the tale, a distressed mother sought Gandhi’s counsel regarding her son’s sugar addiction, echoing my own quest for enlightenment from Prof. Utomi. Instead of resorting to reprimand, Gandhi responded with a rare blend of empathy and patience, instructing the mother to return with her son in two weeks.

Upon their return, Gandhi delivered a simple yet profound message to the boy: “Sugar is not good for us. Hence, I have stopped. Now, go do the same.” This interaction left an indelible mark on me, underscoring the transformative power of leading by example and placing values at the forefront of leadership.

Professor Utomi’s emphasis on authenticity and aligning actions with principles resonated deeply. This encounter reinforced the notion that genuine leadership emanates from embodying the values we advocate for.

Reflection 1: Leading by example:

True leadership stems from living the values we espouse. It is imperative to showcase our values through our actions, inspiring those around us.

Call to Action: Let us commit to leading by example, demonstrating the values we profess in our daily lives. Our actions speak volumes and have the power to inspire positive change in others.

Reflection 2: Prioritizing values:

In a world often driven by expedience, the importance of prioritizing values cannot be overstated. Upholding principles, even in the face of adversity, is a hallmark of effective leadership.

Call to Action: It is crucial to prioritize values above expediency. Let us uphold our principles steadfastly, fostering a culture where values are non-negotiable.

Reflection 3: Authenticity matters:

Authenticity is the bedrock of trust and credibility in leadership. Leaders must strive to be genuine in their actions, creating an environment where authenticity thrives.

Call to Action: Let us endeavour to be authentic leaders, cultivating environments where honesty and transparency flourish. Remember, authenticity breeds trust and fosters genuine connections.

Reflection 4: Inspiring others:

Our actions have a ripple effect, capable of inspiring positive change in others. By aligning our actions with our values, we pave the way for others to follow suit.

Call to Action: By living authentically and aligning our actions with our values, we can inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of positive impact. Remember, our actions can catalyse meaningful change in others.

Final call to action:

Let us integrate values-based leadership into every facet of our lives, both personally and professionally. Together, we can cultivate a world where integrity, empathy, and authenticity reign supreme, shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
