Afriland Properties Plc has confirmed that its headquarters, Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos Island, was hit by a fire on Tuesday, an incident that disrupted operations in one of Nigeria’s busiest commercial districts and raised renewed concerns over safety standards in high-rise buildings.
The property management, investment, and development company, said the fire originated in the building’s inverter room, with smoke spreading quickly through several floors, including escape routes, despite standard evacuation protocols being observed. It added that emergency teams from the Federal Fire Service, the Lagos State Fire Service and other agencies were deployed within minutes to contain the blaze.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted, and we extend our heartfelt sympathies to their families and loved ones,” Afriland said in a statement, adding that a formal investigation had begun.
The real estate investment and development firm praised the heroic efforts of the emergency responders, first aid workers, and members of the public who helped limit the damage. While no official casualty figures have been released, the company has promised to issue regular updates as more information is verified.
“Afriland Properties Plc will continue to provide timely updates as verified information becomes available,” the company added.
