Airport management company and concessionaire-managers of Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2, Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited has demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability by joining communities worldwide in the collective effort to clean up litter and promote a cleaner, healthier planet.

Bi-Courtney took this stand on the occasion of World Cleanup Day earlier this month, which aims to activate five percent of the world’s population to catalyse lasting societal behaviour change around mismanaged waste.

Nafisat Adeniran, the company’s head of safety, speaking on the development said: “In our own little way of joining the activated five percent of the world’s population MMA2 organised awareness events to engage all MMA2 drivers. This is to educate them on how to manage waste within and outside the terminal. We also educated them on how to dispose of it correctly and to ensure that all their vehicles are equipped with baskets so that waste is properly collected and disposed of. We did rally up drivers and MMA2 top management to take part in this event by cleaning up the drivers’ park as evidence of top leadership commitment. We would continually reiterate our eco-friendly programme – The recycle waste.

“MMA2 is committed to environmental sustainability through its different initiatives from the management of the specialised FOOD waste on the apron (Airside) to recycling of general waste on the landside and taking part in the World Cleanup Day to sensitise people and to join the millions of volunteers around the globe to tackle the global mismanaged waste crisis and to help create a new, more sustainable and waste-free world for this and future generations,” she said.

BASL organised a cleanup event at the terminal while volunteers from the company participated in collecting waste and restoring the area to its natural beauty.

To mark the day, the senior management team of BASL went out to the driver’s park and cleaned it up, trashing waste appropriately.

The company in a statement said by participating in World Cleanup Day, it aims to raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing our planet and encourage others to act. The company believes that collective efforts can make a significant impact on preserving our natural resources and creating a sustainable future for generations to come.

Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, head of corporate communications at BASL, said: “We recognise that a clean and healthy environment is crucial not just for the aviation industry but for the entire ecosystem. At BASL, sustainability is embedded in our operational ethos, and World Clean-Up Day offers us an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to maintaining a greener planet. Through this initiative, we hope to inspire individuals and other organisations to prioritise environmental cleanliness for the benefit of future generations.”

A statement signed by Yinka-Olawuyi, also noted that in addition to the World Clean-Up Day activities, the company said it has adopted a series of eco-friendly practices aimed at reducing waste and carbon emissions, including: Waste Reduction Initiatives: Implementing effective waste management systems within the terminal, including recycling programmes; Community Outreach: Engaging in regular environmental awareness programmes to educate and involve the public in our sustainability mission.
