Apple to introduce AI-driven battery Optimisation with iOS 19 update

Apple is set to launch a new artificial intelligence-powered battery optimisation feature as part of its highly anticipated iOS 19 update, slated for release in September.

This innovative tool is designed to enhance iPhone battery efficiency by learning user habits and dynamically adjusting system behaviors to conserve energy without compromising overall device performance.

The forthcoming smart battery management system will continuously analyse how users interact with their iPhones, allowing it to make real-time modifications—such as reducing power-hungry background processes or energy-intensive features—based on predictive insights. It will rely on data collected from millions of devices globally to intelligently forecast when and how to scale back power consumption.

This new feature will form a critical part of Apple’s broader AI initiative branded as Apple Intelligence, which is being integrated across the company’s software ecosystem. As part of the update, iPhone users will also notice a new lock-screen indicator showing estimated time remaining until a full charge, offering greater transparency in daily power usage.

The battery enhancement is also tailored with Apple’s upcoming hardware in mind, particularly the ultra-slim iPhone 17. Expected to debut alongside standard and Pro variants, this new model will feature a significantly thinner design, which will necessitate a smaller battery. In response, Apple Intelligence’s power-saving capabilities are intended to mitigate potential concerns over reduced battery life by increasing overall power efficiency. However, the feature won’t be limited to the iPhone 17—it will be available on all iPhones compatible with iOS 19.

The move underscores Apple’s broader strategy to embed artificial intelligence deeper into its product lineup, especially as competition heats up from tech giants such as OpenAI, Alphabet’s Google, and Microsoft. Apple’s first wave of AI tools, introduced earlier, included advanced functionalities like AI-powered text editing, smart notification summaries, custom emoji generation, and object removal in photos.

Looking ahead, the firm plans to extend Apple Intelligence beyond the iPhone. The iPad, Mac, and even the Apple Watch will benefit from the AI suite, although some devices, like the Watch, may not directly run AI models due to limited processing capacity. Instead, they will host features tagged as “powered by Apple Intelligence,” indicating support through cloud or companion device integration.

In addition to performance enhancements, iOS 19 will debut a redesigned user interface, internally codenamed Solarium. Inspired by the aesthetics of sunlit glass rooms, the new design aims to create a cohesive visual experience across Apple’s device range, especially unifying the look and feel between iPads and Macs.

Another noteworthy upgrade will address a long-standing user inconvenience: iOS 19 will enable seamless connection to Wi-Fi networks that typically require browser-based logins, such as those found in hotels, airports, and gyms.

Meanwhile, Apple has rolled out iOS 18.5, a maintenance update featuring bug fixes and minor feature enhancements. A subsequent iOS 18.6 update is also in development, which is expected to bring Apple Intelligence capabilities to users in China; a key strategic market for the company.
