Canon, a global leader in imaging and print solutions, has in partnership with the Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR), a non-profit women empowerment organisation, concluded the Women Who Empower initiative, equipping 15 Nigerian women with the skills, knowledge, and resources necessary to shape a more diverse and inclusive future in the imaging and print industry.
In a culmination of the month-long initiative, Canon and WISCAR recently hosted an event at the Radisson Blu Ikeja in Lagos to commemorate the accomplishments of 15 talented Nigerian women in the print and imaging sectors. The event was attended by senior executives from Canon and WISCAR, industry leaders, media personalities, among other participants.
As demonstrated by Canon’s various diversity and inclusivity programmes, the initiative also aligns with its corporate philosophy ‘Kyosei’, a Japanese term which means living and working together for the common good.

The initiative, in its commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity in the print and imaging industry, designed a comprehensive curriculum that consisted of three modules: printing, photography, and content creation.
Led by Nigerian professionals, including Daniel Ehimen, a cinematographer and Canon ambassador, who guided participants in the art of content creation; and Emmanuel Oyeleke, a lifestyle photographer and Canon ambassador, who imparted his expertise in photography and printing, the programme equipped the 15 participants with the essential skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the print and imaging industry.
Ehimen led the participants through a comprehensive curriculum that covered the building blocks of videography, from the art of camera mastery to the craft of storytelling. Through hands-on exercises and personalised feedback, the participants gained a deeper understanding of the videography process, honing their skills and expanding their artistic horizons.
Oyeleke’s expertise was instrumental in leading the participants through the world of photography. From the core principles of composition and lighting to the art of storytelling through the lens, Oyeleke crafted an interactive and practical curriculum that honed the participants’ photography skills, building their confidence behind the camera and fostering a deep understanding of the craft. Oyeleke also took the participants on a comprehensive journey through the world of photographic printing. The workshop was designed to provide participants with the necessary tools and knowledge to showcase their work in the best possible light, exploring various printing solutions and strategies for creating captivating photo portfolios.
The event culminated in a captivating portfolio exhibition, where participants brought their remarkable achievements and newfound skills to life. The exhibition captivated audiences with its blend of evocative photographs, rich in storytelling and dynamic video content, each a vibrant reflection of the participants’ unique talents and passions.
Among the many talented individuals, two standout participants received special recognition for their exceptional dedication, creativity, and progress. Joy Ngwolo and Obianuju Lilian Ikegbune were honored for their outstanding contributions to the programme.
Joy Ngwolo, a PR professional and photographer, reflecting on her journey, shared: “Prior to ‘Women Who Empower’ photography classes, my camera skills were limited by a basic understanding. The programme’s comprehensive training has been transformative, equipping me with a solid grasp of photographic techniques and the science behind them. The resulting improvement in my image quality is remarkable.
“I highly recommend these classes to anyone seeking to elevate their photography to the next level. I’m incredibly grateful to Canon & WISCAR for this invaluable experience.”
Obianuju Lilian Ikegbune expressed her gratitude, stating, As a Public Relations and Marketing Communications Strategist, I was drawn to the Canon x Wiscar Women Who Empower Programme for its focus on empowering women in the thriving creative industry. I gained valuable knowledge on storytelling techniques like the ‘rule of thirds,’ camera handling fundamentals, and key considerations for brand storytelling, which will undoubtedly set me apart in the professional arena.
“I am incredibly grateful to Canon and WISCAR for offering this program, the chance to learn from industry leaders like Emmanuel and Ehimen, and the opportunity to connect with a network of fellow creatives.”
Amina Oyagbola, founder & Chairperson, WISCAR, described the partnership with Canon as a resounding success, empowering women in the print and imaging industries. This collaboration, Oyagbola explained, serves as a powerful blueprint for partnerships that break down barriers, drive meaningful change, and pave the way for a more inclusive future in the print and imaging industries.
“At WISCAR, we believe in the transformative power of empowering women and girls, and this partnership aligns perfectly with our values of inspiring, educating, and mentoring women to reach their full potential.
“By working together, we have made a tangible impact on the lives of women in Nigeria, and we look forward to continuing this important work, creating a ripple effect of positive change that resonates throughout the industry and beyond,” the WISCAR founder stated.
Somesh Adukia, managing director, Canon Central & North Africa, remarked that Canon is guided by an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These core values, according to him, are not just aspirations, but the very foundation upon which the company builds a thriving and innovative future.
“We believe in creating an environment where everyone can thrive, and collaborating with partners like WISCAR reinforces this commitment. Together, we are shaping a more inclusive and groundbreaking future in the imaging industry,” Adukia said.
