Leading solar energy firm, d.light has been tapped as a major participant to Nigeria’s Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES) initiative, set to launch this month with the aim of expanding access to renewable energy across the country.

The DARES programme represents a bold step toward sustainable energy access in Nigeria. Spearheaded by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and funded by the World Bank, DARES will drive large-scale deployment of solar-powered mini-grids and standalone solar home systems.

The $750 million initiative, backed by the World Bank, aims to transform Nigeria’s energy landscape by expanding electrification through decentralised renewable energy solutions, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Of the total $750 million budget, $300 million is specifically allocated to distributed solar energy solutions, aligning perfectly with the federal government of Nigeria’s ambitious Energy Transition Plan and commitment to expanding off-grid electrification and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

More than just an electrification initiative, DARES is designed to stimulate economic development by creating job opportunities, enhancing access to healthcare and education, and fostering local capacity-building for renewable energy operations and maintenance.

Recognised as a leading player in solar energy solutions for underserved markets, d.light’s selection as a key contributor to the DARES initiative is attributed to the company’s expertise and proven ability to deliver high-quality solar products on a large scale.

This is underpinned by its over-a-decade experience operating in Nigeria, combined with success in significant energy initiatives like Uganda’s $148 million UECCC programme. The company’s expertise in solar energy solutions for low-income households is expected to contribute significantly to bridging Nigeria’s electricity gap.

With the DARES initiative set to commence, d.light has pledged its commitment to playing a crucial role in the realisation of one of Africa’s most ambitious renewable energy initiatives.

Having a proven track record of delivering innovative off-grid energy solutions and a longstanding mission of providing sustainable and transformative solar power to underserved communities, d.light’s participation in DARES will serve to strengthen the company’s position as a leader in renewable energy, bringing affordable and reliable solar power to millions across Nigeria.

Valentine Okwara, managing director, d.light Nigeria, described DARES as a major catalyst in the company’s mission to empower millions with reliable, affordable, and sustainable solar energy solutions.

According to Okwara, the initiative goes beyond lighting homes, but about unlocking economic potential, enhancing productivity, and driving inclusive growth across Nigeria.

“We want to ensure that no child’s education is hindered by the lack of light in Kafanchan, that small and micro businesses in Baruten can extend their work hours and boost profitability, and that local health centers in Ohafia can provide better care, ultimately reducing maternal mortality.

“At d.light, we remain steadfast in our commitment to transforming lives through sustainable energy solutions, ensuring that no one is left behind,” the MD stated.
