Edo State says video on Dangote truck inaccurate, misleading

The Edo State government on Thursday described as misleading and inaccurate a social media trending video that linked a purportedly impounded Dangote truck with allegedly conveying arms and other contraband materials.

The truck had been alleged to be recently impounded by the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Benin City. But the state government, in a statement issued from the governor’s office, said after it consulted with the NDLEA, it found that no Dangote truck was at anytime impounded for carrying ammunition in Edo State.

The government statement, signed by Crusoe Osagie, special adviser, media and communication strategy, Edo State Government, noted that Peter Bisong, commander of NDLEA in Edo State, stated that the truck in the said video was one impounded by his men in 2016, where the driver was found to have connived with some persons to transport cannabis, stressing that no arm or ammunition was impounded in that exercise in 2016.

“The driver involved in that incident has since been tried in the High Court in Benin and jailed. The company, Dangote Industries Limited, was found not to have played any role in the crime and the truck has since been returned to the company,” the government said.

It noted that Dangote has also been consistent in issuing warnings that prohibit truck drivers from carrying any product other than Dangote products, with members of the public been also urged to report erring drivers.

The Edo State government, therefore, advised the general public to disregard the misleading video, while urging those behind the promotion of the fake news and misleading message to desist from what it says are “mischievous acts”.
