Globacom expands network nationwide, targets better service, sustainability

Globacom, one of Nigeria’s leading telecommunications companies, has announced a wide-scale network improvement and expansion initiative aimed at significantly enhancing service delivery, boosting coverage, and improving overall customer experience across the country.

The company made the announcement in a statement issued recently, reaffirming its commitment to delivering world-class network services—particularly in light of the recent tariff adjustments approved by regulatory authorities. According to the telecoms giant, the ongoing project is part of its strategic investment to ensure subscribers continue to receive strong value for their money despite industry-wide cost pressures.

“As part of this nationwide upgrade, we have made the decision—at a huge cost—to relocate fibre infrastructure that has been vandalised in various areas due to uncoordinated road construction activities. This move is to guarantee best-in-class service delivery to our valued customers,” Globacom stated.

One of the cornerstone components of the upgrade involves the deployment of new base stations, targeted not only at extending coverage to previously underserved areas but also at densifying existing urban centres experiencing population growth. The company said this approach will ensure excellent voice and data service quality across Nigeria.

Among the critical areas where the relocation of fibre infrastructure is already underway are key national corridors such as Auchi–Okene, Benin–Ekpoma, Lafia–Akwanga, Minna–Abuja, and Funtua–Gusau. These fibre realignments are expected to resolve network degradation caused by recent road projects in those zones.

Globacom revealed that it is already completing several hundred new base station sites across the country. So far in 2025, the network has deployed thousands of 4G LTE sites in strategic cities and locations, with hundreds more under construction to boost coverage and capacity.

In addition, the telco disclosed that it is executing a significant upgrade of its backhaul infrastructure, involving improvements to both microwave and fibre-optic links, alongside systematic enhancements to its core network. These upgrades, the company said, are designed to provide customers with faster data speeds, reduced latency, and improved reliability.

Looking forward, Globacom targets the rollout of over 1,000 additional sites within the next year, with a strong emphasis on LTE deployment to deepen its broadband footprint across Nigeria. The company is also prioritising the extension of fibre connectivity to many of its hub sites to ensure long-term resilience and consistent quality of service.

In a notable shift towards environmental sustainability, Globacom disclosed that it is investing in hybrid power solutions across its network infrastructure. The company is increasingly relying on battery-powered systems as a replacement for traditional generators at its sites—an initiative aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency.

However, despite the progress being made, the company expressed concern over ongoing cases of vandalism and sabotage affecting its infrastructure. It warned that such acts pose a serious threat to network reliability, especially considering that telecoms infrastructure has been classified as critical national infrastructure. Globacom therefore called for stronger protection measures and more decisive enforcement to deter further destruction of its facilities.

Globacom assured customers that these ongoing investments reflect its long-standing promise to offer superior quality of service, wider network reach, and enhanced user satisfaction.
