Google has unveiled an education initiative aimed at reshaping how African students engage with artificial intelligence and technology-driven learning. The tech giant will provide free 12-month access to its premium AI suite, Google AI Pro, to eligible university students across six African countries including  Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

Under the initiative, students aged 18 and above can access Google’s most advanced generative AI tools through Gemini 2.5 Pro, the company’s flagship model. The offer, running between October 7 and December 9, 2025, allows students to activate their subscription through a simple verification process on the dedicated student portal. Once enrolled, they gain access to a comprehensive suite of AI-powered tools designed to enhance research, creativity, and productivity, from drafting reports and coding support to video generation and note organization.

The package offers several features tailored to the academic environment. Through the Guided Learning function, students can summarise academic materials, debug code, and receive interactive step-by-step assistance on complex research tasks. The Deep Research feature enables users to compile cited reports from multiple sources in minutes, a tool that could transform how dissertations and large assignments are handled. In addition, NotebookLM helps organise study materials and link ideas coherently, while Veo 3 allows users to produce short, high-quality videos from text or image prompts, bridging the gap between data analysis and creative presentation. The plan also includes 2 TB of cloud storage across Google’s ecosystem for coursework, data, and multimedia projects.

Alex Okosi, managing director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, described the initiative as a way to democratise access to cutting-edge technology while preparing Africa’s youth for the AI-driven economy. “We are seeing a new wave of innovation in Africa, driven by the energy and ingenuity of our young people. By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to not only excel in their studies but also to become critical builders and shapers of the future,”Okosi said.

The offer builds on Google’s track record of investing in digital skills and innovation across Africa. Initiatives such as the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and the Digital Skills for Africa programme have already equipped millions with tools to scale businesses and build sustainable digital careers. With AI Pro for students, Google extends that commitment directly into the education sector, targeting the pipeline of future innovators who will define Africa’s next phase of technological growth.
