LCCI welcomes Leye Kupoluyi as 44th president amid calls for trade innovation

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has elected Leye Kupoluyi as its 44th President and Chairman of Council, ushering in a new leadership phase projected to deepen the chamber’s influence in shaping business policy and promoting trade innovation.

Kupoluyi, an engineer with over four decades of experience across power engineering, facilities management, renewable energy, and commerce, succeeds Gabriel Idahosa, whose tenure ended earlier this month. Until his election, Kupoluyi served as deputy president of the chamber. His elevation was formally announced by Chinyere Almona, LCCI director-general during the Chamber’s 137th Annual General Meeting at Commerce House, Victoria Island, Lagos.

“Engr. Leye Kupoluyi is an accomplished professional with an exceptional record of leadership, dedication, and service across engineering services, trade promotion, and industry development. We are confident that his presidency will further strengthen the Chamber’s role as a leading advocate for sound business policies and practices,” Almona said.

Kupoluyi’s election comes at a pivotal moment for Nigerian commerce, as the economy undergoes structural reforms, fluctuating foreign exchange rates, and the need to attract domestic and foreign investment. His leadership is expected to reinforce the chamber’s policy advocacy efforts, particularly in enhancing a more competitive and innovation-driven environment for Nigerian businesses.

His tenure as chairman of the Trade Promotion Board from 2021 to 2023 highlights his capacity for driving practical initiatives. Notably, he introduced the Tech Hub Project and implemented a free-entry initiative at the 2022 Lagos International Trade Fair, boosting participation, innovation, and visibility for local enterprises.

A Chartered Engineer in the United Kingdom, Kupoluyi holds an MBA in Technology Management from Olabisi Onabanjo University and completed a Senior Management Course at the University of Manchester. His career spans senior roles at Honeywell Enterprises Ltd. and Witt & Busch Ltd., and in 1995, he founded Universal Power Systems Nigeria Limited, where he currently serves as Managing Director and CEO.

Within professional and civic circles, Kupoluyi has earned recognition as a Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants and holds memberships with the Institution of Electrical Engineers (UK) and the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture’s Bilateral and Multilateral Committee. His previous public service includes a stint on the Governing Council of Lagos State Polytechnic (2015–2019).

Beyond his professional achievements, the chamber noted Kupoluyi’s active involvement in community and church service, as well as international accolades such as the ECOWAS International Gold Award, the Rotary International Entrepreneurship Service Award, and the Gold Award for Excellence in Business Practice.
