The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in collaboration with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN),recently held a webinar aimed at increasing awareness of Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) in Nigeria.
The webinar focuses on promoting DNSSEC validation to boost Nigeria’s digital security landscape. According to a notice shared on the NCC’s official social media platform, the initiative targets achieving at least 50 per cent DNSSEC validation nationwide by the end of the year.
DNSSEC, developed by ICANN, is a suite of protocols designed to improve the security of the Domain Name System (DNS). Often referred to as the internet’s phonebook, the DNS translates user-friendly domain names into numerical IP addresses, enabling computers to locate and communicate with each other across the network.
The DNSSEC enhances this process by introducing digital signatures to DNS data, ensuring that responses remain authentic and untampered during transmission.
The growing sophistication of cyber threats has made the adoption of DNSSEC essential for safeguarding internet infrastructure and protecting users from potential attacks. By addressing DNS vulnerabilities, DNSSEC strengthens online security, offering website owners a robust tool to protect their platforms and users.
The partnership between NCC and ICANN to host the webinar underscores the importance of DNSSEC in strengthening Nigeria’s cybersecurity measures while contributing to global efforts to fortify internet safety. This initiative reflects a commitment to fostering a more secure and resilient digital environment.
