Nigeria has solidified its position as a key player in the global telecommunications landscape with the recent appointment of Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to the board of directors of the International Institute of Communications (IIC).

This highlights the telecommunication’s growing influence in shaping global telecom policies and driving digital innovation.

The IIC is a globally respected organisation that brings together leaders in telecommunications, media, and technology to foster dialogue on regulatory frameworks, emerging technologies, and sustainable development.

A seasoned professional, Maida holds an MSc in Systems Engineering from Imperial College London and a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Bath. His career spans over two decades, with contributions to renowned organisations such as British Telecom, Cisco Systems, and EE Ltd.

Before his role as EVC at the NCC, Maida served as the Executive Director of Technology and Operations at the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement Systems PLC (NIBSS). There, he revolutionised Nigeria’s digital payments infrastructure, significantly enhancing the country’s financial systems.

As current EVC of the NCC, he has championed initiatives that promote connectivity, foster competition, and drive inclusivity, propelling Nigeria’s telecom industry into a new era of growth.

Maida’s appointment to the IIC provides Nigeria with a strategic platform to influence critical global discussions on telecommunications and digital equity. His extensive expertise and commitment to policy advocacy are expected to contribute significantly to addressing challenges such as the digital divide and the adoption of emerging technologies.

Commenting  on his appointment, Maida stated, “It’s an honour to serve on the Board of the International Institute of Communications. I look forward to sharing insights from Nigeria’s transformative journey and collaborating on strategies to foster a more inclusive and sustainable global telecom industry.”
