The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched the Nigeria Data Protection Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan 2023-2027 (NDP-SRAP), with an ambitious target of generating over N125 billion in revenue over the next five years.
The NDP-SRAP covers five key areas: governance, ecosystem and technology, human capital development, cooperation and collaboration, and funding and sustainability and aims to create a sustainable ecosystem for the protection of personal data and information, by establishing a robust data protection regime, developing human capital and fostering cooperation and collaboration
In his remarks, Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, stressed the significance of the NDP-SRAP in building a strong data protection sector. He emphasised its importance in advancing Nigeria’s digital agenda, creating jobs, generating wealth, developing human capital, generating revenue, and laying the groundwork for the digital economy.
“These activities are expected to create about 500,000 jobs, generate revenue of more than N125bn, and expand the sector within the lifespan of this roadmap,”he said.
Olatunji also noted that the NDP-SRAP will help to attract international businesses and develop human capital in Nigeria, which in turn will enhance the country’s global competitiveness. He stressed the importance of data security in protecting people’s data and information from unauthorised access, and highlighted the need for robust data protection infrastructure.

According to Olatunji, the NDP-SRAP will help to address the issue of identity theft and unauthorised access to people’s data, which can lead to malicious use of information. He stated that the roadmap will also build trust and improve the global perception of Nigeria, as a country with a robust data protection regime. This, in turn, will help to attract foreign investment and create new economic opportunities.
