Nigeria’s telecommunications sector experienced a surge in mobile number portability in January 2025, with a total of 8,708 subscribers switching networks, according to the latest industry statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The report reveals that 9mobile bore the brunt of the migration, recording the highest number of departing customers. A total of 6,716 subscribers ported away from the network, reflecting growing concerns among users regarding service quality and network performance.
Number portability, which allows mobile users to switch networks while retaining their original numbers, has become a significant indicator of customer satisfaction in Nigeria’s competitive telecom market. The NCC’s data suggests that subscribers are actively seeking better service experiences, competitive tariff plans, and improved network coverage.
While 9mobile experienced the largest outflow of users, the report also indicates movements across other operators, though in smaller numbers.
According to the commission,Airtel lost 399 subscribers but gained 2,414 new customers. Globacom saw 405 users port out, while 736 new subscribers joined its network. MTN, Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, lost 1,188 subscribers but welcomed 5,551 new customers.
On the other hand, 9mobile managed to attract only seven new subscribers despite its significant losses. Overall, the total number of porting activities surged to 8,708 in January compared to the 2,998 recorded in December 2024.
Last year, the NCC’s enforcement of the National Identification Number-SIM linkage disrupted the telecom market, leading to massive SIM disconnections. Some users who were initially affected are now returning, choosing different networks.
Meanwhile, the telecom sector recorded a significant rebound in January 2025, with active mobile subscriptions rising to 169.3 million from 164.9 million in December 2024.
MTN maintained its dominance, leading the market with 87.5 million subscribers and a 51.79 per cent market share. Airtel followed with 57.6 million users, representing 34.11 per cent of the market. Globacom had 20.5 million subscribers, holding a 12.15 per cent market share.
However, 9mobile continued to struggle, with its subscriber base stagnating at 3.2 million for the third consecutive month, accounting for just 1.94 per cent of the market.
