The intervention of Lateef Fagbemi, Nigeria’s attorney general (AGF) and minister of justice, in the ongoing saga between immediate past governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has received a resounding welcome from Anthony Kila, a renowned professor of political economy and director, Commonwealth Institute of Advanced and Professional Studies (CIAPS).
Kila praised Fagbemi for his statement about the ongoing attempt by the Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC) to arrest and interrogate the former governor Bello.
The public affairs analyst said the AGF’s intervention was timely and meaningful in an address at an international forum of African and Caribbean political scholars on Friday morning during a webinar organised to discuss economic and developmental opportunities in African and Caribbean countries.
“The AGF’s intervention in the matter of a former governor evading arrest by the anticorruption agency in Nigeria is both timely and meaningful. The minister of justice could have buried his head in the sand or acted quietly, his public statement sends a message saying we value justice,” Kila said.
His reaction followed Fagbemi’s statement inviting the embattled former governor to “toe the path of decency”
Admitting that he was not a fan of the current minister of justice, Kila also noted that “he (Fagbemi) was not my preffred choice for the job of AGF but with this singular act of not defending the law, he has shown that he understands the importance of the rule of law in a system that wants work.”
The professor invited scholars to not find what is wrong or proffer solution but to also take time to highlight those who do good things.
