The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), said the collapse of the national grid in the early hours of the morning which occurred after a fire incident on Kainji/Jebba 330kV line 2 is being investigated, with the view to forestalling future occurrence and invariably further strengthening the grid.
Ndid Mbah, TCN’s general manager for public affairs, in a statement, also confirmed that grid restoration nationwide is in progress and has reached advanced stages with power supply restored in some parts of the country including the west, north-central, south, east, and a large portion of the northern states.
According to Mbah, “The power supply restoration is sequel to the total grid collapse, which occurred at 12.35am, this morning, causing outage nationwide, after over 421 days of consistent grid stability.
In the course of the grid restoration, the process initially suffered a setback; this did not amount to another collapse.”
Business A.M had earlier reported that the power grid, managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) from its base in Osogbo, Osun State, had experienced a major failure in the early hours of Thursday, resulting in widespread power outages across much of the country.
A number of distribution companies (DISCOs) confirmed that the grid went down at about 12:41 am, leading to a significant loss of power supplied to their feeders.
Reports also indicated that the total power on the grid stood at 35MW at about 1 am, indicating that the country experienced a total collapse.Afterwards, the grid rose to 193MW at about 3am before climbing to 273MW. The power on the grid rose further to 798.50MW by 6.00am, before plunging to 48.50MW at 7.00am.
