Popular social media network, Snapchat, has announced plans to go into the creation of original television shows.
The decision will make them lock horns with Netflix, which is currently the world’s largest creator of online streaming content.
Snap Inc the parent company has teamed up with NBC Universal to create a digital content studio to be based in California, the home of Hollywood.
Programmers and filmmakers would be co-opted for the creation of the three to five-minute shows, which can be obtained in the app.
Snap Inc is however silent on the exact things which you can see on the app.
The first original show will be produced with US film and TV producers Mark and Jay Duplass and and their new Donut creative studio.
Mark says: “We’re super psyched to partner with Snap and NBCUniversal.
“For us, shooting in that vertical mobile format is a terrifying and thrilling creative challenge.”
Snapchat’s announcement came shortly after Facebook announced the launch of its video service called watch.
There has been an intense rivalry between Facebook and Snapchat ever since the latter turned down the offer to be purchased by the world’s largest social media network for $3 billion in 2013.
Facebook has used instagram to clone some of the things that Snapchat does.
