Transcorp Hotels Plc has appointed Awele Vivien Elumelu as chair of its board, effective 1 January 2026, signalling a development in its approach to hospitality and wellness-focused operations. The move comes as the company prepares to navigate a competitive and evolving African hospitality market following the retirement of Emmanuel N. Nnorom.
Elumelu, a medical doctor with experience in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom, brings a combination of healthcare expertise, corporate governance experience, and philanthropic leadership. She currently chairs Avon Healthcare Limited, Nigeria’s leading health maintenance organisation, and oversees the Avon Medical Practice hospital network. She also chairs Heirs Insurance Brokers and serves as a founding director of Heirs Holdings Limited, the family-owned investment group.
Her appointment underscores Transcorp Hotels’ intention to integrate wellness and responsible business practices into its portfolio, which includes the flagship Transcorp Hilton Abuja and the recently inaugurated 5,000-seat Transcorp Centre.
Elumelu’s track record in philanthropy, most notably as co-founder and trustee of the Tony Elumelu Foundation, which has supported more than 24,000 African entrepreneurs, adds a social impact dimension to her role. Her focus on mentorship and gender inclusion aligns with investor expectations around environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, which are increasingly influencing capital flows into African hospitality and tourism sectors.
