U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May described Saturday night’s terror attack in London as a “perversion of Islam” and part of a “new trend”, reports Bloomberg.
“Defeating this ideology is one of the great challenges of our time,” she said.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick earlier said seven members of the public were killed, while 48 people had been injured.
A major incident was declared after a van swerved into late-night crowds on London Bridge, before three men got out and went on a stabbing rampage through nearby bars. The three attackers were killed by police.
The attack comes as campaigning for the June 8 election enters its final stages. May confirmed Sunday the election would still proceed as planned.
Saturday’s incident was the third terror attack to hit Britain in the last three months. Last month 22 people, including children, were killed by a suicide bomber at a pop concert in Manchester.
