The Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy (FMCIDE) has announced a new grant of N2.8 billion from Google.org aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence (AI) talent development across Nigeria.
The funding, awarded to Data Science Nigeria, is designed to enhance the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to empower young Nigerians and address the pressing skills gap among the underemployed and unemployed population, with a particular focus on AI education and skill enhancement.
This latest development follows Google’s earlier commitment of N100 million to the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) AI Fund, which was disclosed in September.

According to the ministry, this grant is part of Google.org’s broader commitment of $5.8 million dedicated to supporting digital skills programs across Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the tech giant’s investment in the region’s future.
The N2.8 billion grant will support a range of pivotal initiatives spearheaded by Data Science Nigeria in collaboration with the Federal Ministry, including:
DeepTech Ready Upskilling Programme: This initiative aims to train 20,000 young Nigerians in advanced data science and AI skills, equipping them for lucrative careers in these rapidly evolving sectors.
Experience AI Programme: Designed to empower 25,000 educators, this program will provide them with essential resources and tools to educate 125,000 young Nigerians about AI, fostering a new generation of innovators in the field.
Government AI Campus Programme: This program seeks to enhance the AI policymaking capabilities of public servants and policymakers, ensuring that Nigeria’s approach to AI governance is both responsible and effective.
Earlier this year, FMCIDE initiated a framework for AI integration in Nigeria by convening the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS) Workshop, which led to the unveiling of the National AI Intelligence Strategy, with focus on utilising AI to stimulate economic growth, improve governance, and enhance the overall quality of life for all Nigerians.
According to the ministry, the new support from Google will build on this strong foundation, further cementing Nigeria’s position as a leader in AI innovation on the continent.
Commenting on the new grant, Bosun Tijani, the minister of communications, innovation & digital economy, highlighted the crucial role of this support in advancing Nigeria’s digital transformation. “This grant from Google underscores our dedication to establishing Nigeria as a frontrunner in AI innovation. By harnessing Google’s expertise and resources, we are opening doors for Nigerians to acquire the skills necessary to succeed in the global digital economy.
“This is a major step forward in our journey towards a more inclusive and innovative future for all Nigerians,” he noted.
This marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and innovative future for all citizens of Nigeria.”
Matt Brittin, president of Google for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, shared Google’s commitment to Africa’s innovation ecosystem, “Across Africa, entrepreneurs are harnessing the power of technology, including AI, to address large-scale societal challenges.
According to Brittin, Google remains committed to supporting these innovators, helping them expand their impact across the continent and beyond.
“Our work in Africa has always been about unlocking the digital economy’s benefits for more people, and this collaboration continues that mission,”he added.
