NIGCOMSAT empowers youth with space-tech hackathon, VSAT training

The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has unveiled a youth empowerment programme focused on enhancing technological skills and expanding broadband access in Nigeria’s North-West region.

The initiative, set to take place in Dutse, Jigawa, from April 7 to 11, will target young innovators, university students, and start-ups across Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, and Jigawa states.

According to Aisha Bantam, head of corporate affairs at NIGCOMSAT, the programme includes a Space-Tech Hackathon and training on Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) installation. She explained that the initiative aims to equip participants with practical knowledge in satellite technology, opening up opportunities in the ICT sector.

This follows a similar programme launched in the North-East, where NIGCOMSAT, in collaboration with the Adamawa State Government, hosted a Space-Tech Hackathon from February 24 to 28 in Yola. That event focused on fostering innovation in satellite technology while promoting economic and social development.

Providing further details, Jane Egerton-Idehen, managing director of NIGCOMSAT Ltd, stated that the North-West edition will offer participants hands-on experience, mentorship, and the opportunity to develop solutions using satellite technology.

“The hackathon encourages participants to identify pressing challenges, develop innovative ideas, and build functional prototypes under the guidance of industry experts,” Egerton-Idehen said.

She added that the winning team will be enrolled in the NIGCOMSAT Accelerator Programme Cohort 2025 to further develop and implement their projects.

Beyond the hackathon, Egerton-Idehen revealed that 100 youths will receive training on VSAT installation, a critical skill for improving broadband access in underserved communities.

“This certification will enhance job prospects for participants, equipping them with the technical expertise needed to pursue careers or entrepreneurial ventures in ICT,” she noted.

She emphasised that the broader goal of the initiative is to inspire technological innovation, address community challenges, and reduce youth unemployment.

“The Space-Tech Hackathons and VSAT Training programmes are designed to drive innovation, solve local challenges, and create opportunities for young people across Nigeria,” Egerton-Idehen said.

The upcoming North-West Hackathon and VSAT training will be co-hosted by the Jigawa State Government in partnership with NIGCOMSAT Ltd.
