MTN, Huawei bring RuralCow to Nigerian villages

Joy Agwunobi

MTN Nigeria, in partnership with Huawei, has successfully completed the commercial deployment of the RuralCow solution, a rapid-deployment, all-in-one mobile base station designed to extend connectivity to remote rural areas.

Unlike traditional macro base stations, RuralCow cuts overall power consumption by approximately 85 percent , reduces equipment quantity by about 70 percent , and requires no heavy machinery for installation. It operates without fiber or microwave links and achieves non-line-of-sight transmission distances of up to 30 kilometers, while intelligent remote operation and maintenance minimize on-site interventions.

The deployment comes at a crucial time for Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, where rural residents account for nearly half of the population, around 105 million people, according to the World Bank (2024). In these areas, dispersed settlements, low population densities, and limited grid power or fiber infrastructure make traditional base station deployments both costly and commercially challenging.

Huawei estimates that villages with fewer than 3,000 inhabitants typically face prolonged return on investment (ROI) periods for mobile infrastructure. However, with RuralCow, villages of 1,000 to 3,000 people can see ROI shortened from 5–10 years to roughly 3 years, ensuring sustainable coverage and commercial viability.

Yahaya Ibrahim, chief technical officer of MTN Nigeria, said, “We believe that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life. Rapidly extending wireless coverage to remote rural areas and ensuring equal access to digital benefits is our shared mission.”

Fang Xiang, vice president of Huawei Wireless Network Product Line, added, “As an industry leader in inclusive connectivity, Huawei is committed to bringing leading technology to rural areas to narrow the digital divide. RuralCow is an ultra-simple, green, and cost-effective solution to provide coverage in rural regions, an essential element of a healthy, sustainable business ecosystem. We will continue our innovation-driven mission of ‘Connecting the Unconnected’ to push for a digitally inclusive world.”

The RuralCow deployment marks the first commercial rollout of its kind globally and represents a major step toward accelerating Nigeria’s drive for digital inclusion, particularly for underserved rural communities. By making connectivity more accessible and cost-effective, MTN Nigeria and Huawei are setting a new standard for sustainable rural telecommunications infrastructure.

The initiative aims to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide, unlocking access to mobile communications for communities that have long remained unconnected.

RuralCow is a compact, energy-efficient mobile network solution that integrates a baseband unit, radio unit, and transmission equipment. Supporting multiple frequency bands and radio access technologies, it significantly reduces both the cost and complexity of deploying mobile infrastructure in hard-to-reach areas.
