Disney taps OpenAI for $1bn AI-powered storytelling with iconic characters

The Walt Disney Company is set to make a landmark $1 billion investment in OpenAI as part of a partnership aimed at bringing the magic of Disney characters into the world of generative artificial intelligence.

The collaboration, announced on Thursday, will span three years and marks a major step in merging AI technology with entertainment storytelling.

Under the agreement, Disney becomes the first major content licensing partner on OpenAI’s Sora platform, a short-form generative AI video tool. Fans will soon be able to create and share short, user-prompted videos featuring more than 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars.

The characters include beloved icons such as  Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo, Stitch, Ariel, Belle, Beast, Cinderella, Baymax, Simba, Mufasa, as well as characters from the worlds of Encanto, Frozen, Inside Out, Moana, Monsters Inc., Toy Story, Up, Zootopia, and many more; plus iconic animated or illustrated versions of Marvel and Lucasfilm characters like Black Panther, Captain America, Deadpool, Groot, Iron Man, Loki, Thor, Thanos, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Leia, the Mandalorian, Stormtroopers, Yoda and more. Users will also have access to a wide range of costumes, props, vehicles, and iconic environments, although the license does not extend to talent likenesses or voices.

Curated selections of these fan-created Sora videos will be available to stream on Disney+, allowing viewers to experience a new layer of interactive storytelling. The platform will also leverage OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images, enabling users to generate fully rendered images from simple text prompts. Both tools are expected to launch for fan creations in early 2026.

Beyond licensing, Disney will become a major customer of OpenAI, integrating its APIs to build new tools and experiences across the company’s ecosystem, including Disney+, and deploying ChatGPT internally for employee use. As part of the investment deal, Disney will receive equity in OpenAI and warrants to purchase additional shares, further cementing the partnership.

Robert A. Iger, CEO, The Walt Disney Company, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, saying, “Technological innovation has continually shaped the evolution of entertainment, bringing new ways to create and share stories. Through this partnership with OpenAI, we will responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling, while protecting creators and their works. Fans will have richer and more personal ways to connect with Disney characters and stories than ever before.”

Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, noted “Disney is the global gold standard for storytelling, and we’re excited to partner to allow Sora and ChatGPT Images to expand the way people create and experience great content. This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to promote innovation that benefits society, respect the importance of creativity, and help works reach vast new audiences.”

Both companies have emphasised a shared commitment to the responsible use of AI. Measures include age-appropriate policies, safeguards against illegal or harmful content, and strict controls to protect intellectual property and individuals’ rights over their likenesses and voices.

This initiative underscores the growing convergence between AI and entertainment, giving fans unprecedented opportunities to interact with and contribute to the worlds they love.
