The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has stepped up itsĀ corporate social responsibility (CRS) with the conclusion of plans toĀ establish women literacy centres (WLC) in 100 communities within itsĀ operational area of Kano, Jigawa and Katsina states.
A press statement issued by Mohammed Kandi, spokesperson of the company,Ā and made available to business.a.m., said the decision followed theĀ successful graduation of sixty pioneer students of the scheme, in earlyĀ February, in Dausayi village, Gezawa Local Government area, Kano state.
Kandi disclosed that the company has appointed a lead consultant, TataĀ Power DDL India, under the management of Ravindra Joshi that hasĀ successfully conducted the pilot project in Dausayi.
According to him, the company has now extended the project to DankunkuruĀ and Dausara communities in Ungogo Local Government Area in Kano State,Ā pointing out it targets one hundred more communities in 2019, insistingĀ that the outcome of the first literacy initiative was impressive.
āOur aim of establishing the WLCs is to provide basic education forĀ women who are outright illiterates or semi-literate and have no ideaĀ about KEDCO services towards improving their standard of living. In theĀ long term make them KEDCO ambassadors that can champion swift payment ofĀ electricity bills in the respective communities,ā he stated.
It would be recalled that, Jamil Isyaku Gwamna, managing director of theĀ company launched the WLC initiative in August last year, as part of theĀ companyās Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with a view to consolidating the existing relationship with communities in KEDCOĀ franchise areas, for optimum services.
