Godswill Akpabio sworn in as senate president

Godswill Akpabio, the former minister of Niger Delta Affairs has been sworn in as the Senate President of the 10th assembly.
The former governor of Akwa Ibom, and preferred candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared by Sani Tambuwal, clerk to the National Assembly after scoring 63 votes against Abdul’aziz Yari, former governor of Zamfara State who scored 46 votes.
Akpabio, who succeeded Ahmad Lawan as senate president, was paired with Jibrin Barau, the senator representing Kano South who was elected unopposed as the deputy senate president.
Prior to the election, Ali Ndume,the senator-elect for Borno South nominated Godswill Akpabio, senator-elect for Akwa Ibom North-East, as president of the Senate, while Elisha Abbo, senator-elect for Adamawa North, nominated Abdulaziz Yari, senator-elect for Zamfara West.
The lawmakers cast their votes in alphabetical order, with two representatives of each team counting their votes.
Adeola Solomon and Mohammed Ndume represented Akpabio, while Ishaku Abbo and Jimoh Ibrahim, represented Yari.
