On a recent visit to my local health club, I found myself reflecting on the profound wisdom of American child psychologist Fred Rogers. He once expressed this: “When I was a boy, I used to think that strong meant having big muscles and great physical power. But the longer I live, the more I realize that real strength has much more to do with what is not seen. Real strength has to do with helping others.”
This sentiment resonated deeply with me as I pondered the intricate journey we undertake, from cultivating self-care habits to overcoming deep-seated obstacles and expanding our knowledge to discover our true passions — a secret path gradually unveiled.
On Thursday, after completing my morning workout, I felt an inexplicable urge to linger at the workstation area instead of promptly leaving. Every step in our journey serves a purpose, and it becomes evident that the third mountain on our path involves finding our way back — a journey of return where we uncover our unique means of giving back to others.
As I sat there, the unexpected blare of the buzzer and the announcement of “code red” disrupted the routine. The staff at Virgin Active Health Club swiftly sprang into action, rushing to procure emergency first aid support kits. Despite not being a medical doctor, my therapy training, which included managing trauma and stress, prompted me to offer assistance. I was led to the women’s locker room where a woman had collapsed in the steam room. Through a collective effort with the health club team, we created a safe space for her until she eventually regained her footing.
This incident reinforced the notion that each of us discovers our unique way of giving back — a path as distinct as our individual journeys. As Denzel Washington eloquently put it after receiving his tenth Oscar nomination, “Men give awards, God gives the reward.”
Let’s LEAD with PURPOSE and leap into 2024 with these four reflections and Call to Action for the New Year which my recent encounter at my local health club ignited. They are deep insights that prompted these reflections on leadership as we approach the new year — a time to contemplate, reassess, and set forth with purpose.
Unseen strength in leadership
The journey of leadership, much like personal growth, involves the unseen — navigating challenges, fostering resilience, and cultivating a profound strength that extends beyond physicality. As we reflect on the past year, consider the moments where your leadership strength emerged in unexpected ways, driving positive outcomes.
The path to purposeful leadership:
Leadership is a journey akin to finding one’s way back — the third mountain, a return to core values and a commitment to making a meaningful impact. Reflect on how your leadership style aligns with your core principles and how you can steer your team towards shared purpose and growth in the coming year.
Collective leadership in crisis:
In moments of crisis, true leadership shines through collaboration and swift action. The unexpected “code red” incident at the health club reinforced the significance of collective efforts. Consider how your leadership can foster a collaborative environment, enabling your team to respond effectively to challenges and emergencies.
Leadership in giving back:
Discovering one’s unique way of giving back is an integral part of leadership. Whether it’s offering support in times of need or creating a safe space for others to thrive, leaders play a pivotal role in uplifting those around them. Reflect on the ways you’ve given back and consider how you can amplify these efforts to create a positive impact in the lives of your team and community.
A call to action for the New Year:
As we stand on the brink of a new year, let these reflections guide your leadership journey. Embrace the unseen strength that lies within, align your leadership with purpose, prioritize collaboration in times of crisis, and continue to give back. Let the lessons of the past shape your leadership style, and may the coming year be a testament to your commitment to growth, resilience, and positive impact.
In the areas of leadership, may your actions inspire and uplift, setting the tone for a year filled with purpose, growth, and meaningful connections.
