AI, oil create investment winners as crypto struggles in 2026

Semiconductors and oil have powered the strongest investment returns in 2026, widening the gap with major cryptocurrencies, which have struggled, while small-cap equities have delivered more restrained gains.

An analysis by Coin Insider of more than 20 major investment assets found Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was the strongest performer as of August 25, with a 124.3 percent year-to-date return.

The study, which compares the performance of a hypothetical $1,000 investment across stocks, commodities, indices and cryptocurrencies, puts AMD well ahead of the other assets examined.

At that return, a $1,000 investment in AMD would have generated a $1,243 gain, taking the hypothetical holding to $2,243.

The performance gap was particularly wide across asset classes. The United States Oil Fund (USO), the second-ranked asset in the study, returned 80.9 percent, while West Texas Intermediate crude gained 38.5 percent.

Morgan Stanley returned 24.1 percent, while the Russell 2000 index of small-cap US companies gained 21.3 percent.

At the other end of the spectrum, Bitcoin and Ethereum recorded losses of between 10 percent and 17 percent, according to the study.

AI trade drives semiconductor rise

AMD’s performance has come amid renewed investor enthusiasm for artificial-intelligence infrastructure and semiconductor companies.

The rally has continued beyond the August 25 cut-off used in the Coin Insider analysis. Reuters reported this week that AMD shares had risen 185 percent in 2026, pushing the company’s market capitalisation above $1 trillion for the first time.

That later market performance means the Coin Insider figures should be read as a snapshot rather than a current-year-end ranking.

The semiconductor sector has benefited from expectations of sustained AI-related demand, although the concentration of returns in individual technology companies also highlights the risk associated with relying on a single stock.

AMD’s 124.3 percent gain was more than five times Morgan Stanley’s 24.1 percent return in the Coin Insider comparison.

Oil emerges as strongest commodity

Energy was another major source of gains.

The United States Oil Fund, which provides exposure to crude oil futures, returned 80.9 percent in the study, making it the strongest commodity-related investment among those examined.

West Texas Intermediate crude ranked third overall, with a 38.5 percent return.

The performance reflects the strong move in oil prices during the period, although returns from an oil fund can differ from movements in the underlying physical commodity because of futures-market dynamics and fund expenses.

Small caps offer a different route

The Russell 2000 delivered a 21.3 percent return, putting the small-cap index among the stronger performers in the analysis but well below AMD and oil.

Its performance is notable because the index spreads exposure across a large number of companies rather than relying on the fortunes of a single stock.

The index has substantial exposure to healthcare, financials and industrials, giving investors access to a broader range of businesses.

A Coin Insider financial analyst highlighted the Russell 2000 as an example of how diversification can produce competitive returns without concentrating exposure in one company.

“The boring diversified option performs better than almost any other investment,” the analyst said, arguing that the index’s performance demonstrated the value of exposure across multiple sectors.

Crypto loses ground

The performance of major cryptocurrencies stood in sharp contrast to the gains recorded by equities and oil.

Bitcoin and Ethereum posted losses of between 10 percent and 17 percent in the period covered by the Coin Insider analysis.

The result places two of the largest and most widely followed digital assets near the bottom of the comparison, despite the broader attention cryptocurrency markets have received from investors.

The divergence reinforces the volatility of digital assets and demonstrates the extent to which returns in 2026 have depended on the specific asset and sector selected.

A year of concentrated returns

The 2026 market has delivered sharply different outcomes depending on where investors put their money, according to the Coin Insider analysis.

An initial $1,000 investment in AMD would have generated a $1,243 profit through August 25. The same amount invested in USO would have produced an $809 gain, while WTI and the Russell 2000 would have generated $385 and $213 respectively.

At the other end of the spectrum, losses of 10 percent and 17 percent would have reduced a $1,000 investment to $900 and $830 respectively.

The comparison, according to the data, highlights the importance of considering both return and risk when evaluating market performance. The figures also represent historical returns through August 25, rather than projections of future performance.

Onafriq, a pan-African payments company, is set to discontinue its Baxi agent banking business in Nigeria after five years, citing naira depreciation, rising operating costs and intensifying competition that have weakened the segment’s profitability. The planned shutdown will affect the agent banking operations conducted through Baxi under Onafriq Nigeria Payments Limited. However, the decision does not signal the company’s withdrawal from Nigeria, as it intends to retain its cross-border payments network and card issuing services in the country. In a statement, Onafriq said changes in Nigeria’s operating environment since 2024 had significantly altered the economics of its offline agent banking business, making the existing model unsustainable. The move marks a strategic shift for the company, which entered Nigeria’s agent banking market to expand access to financial services through a network of agents providing transaction services outside traditional bank branches. Onafriq attributed the decision to a combination of macroeconomic pressures and structural changes in the country’s payments industry. According to the company, naira depreciation and inflation have affected transaction volumes, increased operating expenses and undermined the sustainability of its agent banking operations. The growing adoption of instant account-to-account transfers has also changed the mix of transactions handled by agents, while heightened competition among payment service providers has put further pressure on margins. These developments have made it increasingly difficult for the business to remain viable under its existing operating structure, prompting the company to reassess its long-term strategy. Dare Okoudjou, founder and chief executive officer of Onafriq, said the decision to close the business was difficult, particularly given the efforts of employees, agents and business partners who helped build the Baxi network. “We entered Nigeria with conviction and commitment, but did not achieve the outcome we set out for. Closing this business was a difficult decision to arrive at, one that affects colleagues, agents, and business partners across Nigeria who poured their hearts and soul into building out the Baxi network,” Okoudjou said. Despite the closure, he reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the Nigerian market, noting that the group would continue to serve customers through its payments network and card issuing operations. Onafriq entered Nigeria’s agent banking market in 2021 through the acquisition of Baxi, also known as Capricorn Digital Limited. The company said it continued investing in the business through 2023, with efforts focused on expanding and strengthening its agent network. However, a subsequent review of the business’s long-term prospects and financial sustainability led to the decision to wind down the operation. As part of the transition, Onafriq said agents onboarded through the Baxi platform had been moved to another principal bank, a step intended to facilitate continuity for the affected agents. The company has also directed agents to transfer their funds to their preferred principal bank within 30 days, adding that its teams would provide support throughout the transition process. Employees whose roles are linked to the agent banking business will also be consulted and supported during the wind-down, with Onafriq pledging to treat affected workers fairly.
